By Alex Kay Last updated at 7:36 AM on 31st October 2011 * Comments (5) * Share * + + + Goalkeepers must be fuming, managers tearing their hair out and as for Alan Hansen... well, he's probably hiding behind the Match Of The Day sofa. The Premier League has gone goal crazy so far this season, with Saturday's 31 strikes meaning it's more entertaining watching football here than in any of the big leagues across Europe. There have been 291 goals so far this season, which works out as 2.97 per game, a number that has only been beaten once in Premier League history - two seasons ago. And there have only been eight 0-0 draws in the 97 matches played so far. So why are we getting so many goals? Sportsmail takes a look... Goals, goals, goals: Arsenal's Robin Van Persie scored three times against Chelsea Goals, goals, goals: Arsenal's Robin Van Persie scored three times against Chelsea There have been more goals per game in the Premier League than in Europe's other big leagues Premier League 2.97 Bundesliga: 2.82 Ligue 1: 2.59 La Liga: 2.5 Serie A: 2.41 And this season is the second most prolific at the end of October. He has a point. Attacking full-backs are more important than ever - Chelsea's are basically auxiliary wingers - meaning teams are getting forward in numbers and leaving lots of space behind them. The promoted teams are having a say in this too. None of the three are shutting up shop - even away from home. Norwich manager Paul Lambert threw another striker on at just 1-0 at Liverpool at half-time and QPR and Swansea have similar philosophies. It's difficult to name a team in the division whose emphasis is merely on stopping others play. All out attack: Premier League new boys Swansea have been keen to go forward this season, as Joe Allen showed against Bolton All out attack: Premier League new boys Swansea have been keen to go forward this season, as Joe Allen showed against Bolton Four-Four-Who? Long gone are the days of a settled defence. Manchester United have used nine different back fours this season, John Terry's centre half partner at Chelsea has chopped and changed and there is similar instability at Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and plenty of others. Manchester City and Newcastle - who have been a lot more consistent in their selections at the back - have the best defensive records, conceding just eight and six respectively. No Case for the defence This weekend was a perfect example of the defensive howlers that have been so prevalent this season. Chelsea didn't look interested in defending against Arsenal, Moussa Dembele was given the freedom of the DW Stadium for Fulham's second goal and Christopher Samba was completely unmarked to score Blackburn's third at Norwich. And that's just a few examples. The freedom of Wigan: Fulham's Moussa Dembele was given acres of space to score in Saturday's game The freedom of Wigan: Fulham's Moussa Dembele was given acres of space to score in Saturday's game Strike it rich The Premier League might not have goal machines Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo but there is hardly a shortage of strikers who can take your breath away. Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero have been a revelation, Robin van Persie has netted 28 goals in his last 27 league matches and players whose quality or mentality was doubted over the summer - Dzeko, Adebayor, Balotelli, Ba - have been in exceptional form. Capitulations The fashion this season seems to be to fall to pieces and there have been 15 times when teams have scored four goals or more. Arsenal conceded eight at Manchester United, United shipped six against rivals Manchester City, QPR let in six at normally goal-shy Fulham and Tottenham saw five fly past them at home to Roberto Mancini's side. There seems to be a mental fragility - or at least naivety - even among some of the bigger teams. The problem is balance. The reliance on attacking 'fool'backs is absurd. If they are so good at going forward why not play them as wide players in the first place?? It's like everyone jumping on the same buz words. The other classic is how all the coaches ase using naturally left footed player on the right and vice versa. It's like a bunch of Lemings. Both of these can be usefull tactics as a change, a different look, but as the norm...I don't think so. - Les, Vail, 31/10/2011 14:21 Click to rate Rating 1 Report abuse @ Daniel, Madrid I am pretty sure the ball was laid off to him, therefore he scored in open play :) - Danny Crisp, MCFC, 31/10/2011 12:08 Click to rate Rating 6 Report abuse Quite simply..................no one is buying defenders anymore. Every one wants "ball playing" all round footballers. Have another look at Barcelona is my advice. Those boys are "killers." No fancy football for them They leave it to the rest. - Robin, Of Croxley, 31/10/2011 11:15 Click to rate Rating 4 Report abuse Why does your graphic indicate united have scored 0 league goals from direct free kicks? Rooney netted 2 in one game against Arsenal... - Daniel, Madrid, 31/10/2011 09:03 Click to rate Rating 9 Report abuse Another reason is that this Premier League ball moves so much that goalkeepers are unable to hold on to powerful shots. As a Manchester based fan I noticed the Wolves keeper parry a ball straight to Kolorov for a goal: Hart push a shot straight into the path of an onrushing forward ( resulting in a penalty) and De Gae attempt to parry a shot only for the ball to hit him straight on the nose. Goalkeeping has never been more difficult. - EricLo, Manchester England, 31/10/2011 06:58 Click to rate Rating 20 Report abuse The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline.
