Dan Wheldon. Tragedy ... Dan Wheldon. Photo: AP With his good looks, slicked-back hair and confident demeanour, England's Dan Wheldon was the race driver who looked as though he had stepped out of Motor Sport magazine in the 1960s and '70s. He could have been a contemporary of Graham Hill, Francois Cevert or Gilles Villeneuve, and he had the talent and personality to go with his action-hero looks. Two Indy 500 victories and an Indycar title were peaks in a career of highlights. Wheldon found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time at Las Vegas last Sunday, and paid for it with his life. He was involved in a brutal 15-car crash on lap 11 of the season finale and died of ''unsurvivable'' head injuries. The Vegas oval was too fast, too tight - too perilous - to cope with 34 cars running lap averages a whisker above 400km/h. ''We all had a bad feeling about this place in particular just because of the high banking and how easy it was to go flat,'' driver Oriol Servia said. ''We knew it could happen, but it's just really sad.'' Dario Franchitti, who won after the race was called off, said: ''I could see within five laps people were starting to do crazy stuff.'' Advertisement: Story continues below IFRAME: http://ad-apac.doubleclick.net/adi/onl.smh.sport/sport/motorsport;cat=s port;ctype=article;cat1=motorsport;pos=3;sz=300x250;tile=3;ord=7.979759 2E7? It was Indycar's first fatality since 2006, when Paul Dana was killed in Miami, ironically at a race won by Wheldon. Indycar's wake-up call has come too late to save Wheldon. Perhaps the other drivers can benefit. Insiders say future Indycars need to be bigger, slower and safer. Reigning five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson spoke out during the week against the Indycars racing on ovals, saying they were not safe enough. ''Those cars are fantastic for street circuits, for road courses. I hate, hate, hate that this tragedy took place. You can't control those cars when they are off the ground.'' GOLD COAST SOS The Wheldon tragedy has thrown into turmoil some teams' co-driver plans for this weekend's V8 Supercar Gold Coast 600. He was earmarked to drive with James Courtney, and several other mourning Indycar racers have elected to withdraw. A hasty SOS went out to other internationals. This columnist still believes signing drivers unfamiliar with these lumbering V8s is a stupid concept which, based on last year's demolition derby, could be both very expensive and could also affect the title hopes of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup. I hope I'm wrong. STONER ROCKS Casey Stoner was a little star on Sunday. On a treacherous dry/wet track, he could have cruised around and finished in the top six, gathering enough points to seal the MotoGP world championship. But he's not like that, and the outcome was his fifth consecutive Australian Grand Prix win. There has been chat in the media that Stoner could top Mick Doohan's swag of five world titles, but he has always maintained that once he's had his fill, he'll walk away. He loves fishing and the farm life, and with a bub on the way, it'll be surprising if he's still racing at 30. That said, he seems to be enjoying life at 330km/h. And let's point out that 12 months ago, Stoner won the AGP on a Ducati and Valentino Rossi is struggling with the same brand this year. The Italian's straight-talking crew chief Jeremy Burgess has suggested the problems at Ducati might stem from poor rider input rather than some issue with the bike. Meanwhile, Jorge Lorenzo will keep his ring finger after Melbourne surgeons saved nerves and tendons in an operation on the mangled digit. TV TRIP-UP Blame a wayward typing finger for the mistake in my item last week about the excellent Bathurst 1000 TV ratings. Highlighting the fact that the telecast out-scrimmaged the Wallabies-Springboks World Cup quarter-final, I inadvertently gave the fat guys in yellow too much credit. Bathurst averaged more than 1.2 million viewers over seven hours; the rugby managed 1.17m. Join the conversation You're the only person reading this now.
