Under legislation expected in next month's Queen's Speech, internet companies will be instructed to install hardware enabling GCHQ - the Government's electronic "listening" agency - to examine "on demand" any phone call made, text message and email sent, and website accessed in "real time", The Sunday Times reported. A previous attempt to introduce a similar law was abandoned by the former Labour government in 2006 in the face of fierce opposition. However ministers believe it is essential that the police and security services have access to such communications data in order to tackle terrorism and protect the public. Although GCHQ would not be able to access the content of such communications without a warrant, the legislation would enable it to trace people individuals or groups are in contact with, and how often and for how long they are in communication. The Home Office confirmed that ministers were intending to legislate "as soon as parliamentary time allows". "It is vital that police and security services are able to obtain communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism and to protect the public. We need to take action to maintain the continued availability of communications data as technology changes," a spokesman said. "Communications data includes time, duration and dialling numbers of a phone call, or an email address. It does not include the content of any phone call or email and it is not the intention of Government to make changes to the existing legal basis for the interception of communications." Nick Pickles, director of the Big Brother Watch campaign group, said: "This is an unprecedented step that will see Britain adopt the same kind of surveillance seen in China and Iran. "This is an absolute attack on privacy online and it is far from clear this will actually improve public safety, while adding significant costs to internet businesses. "If this was such a serious security issue why has the Home Office not ensured these powers were in place before the Olympics?" * Contribute to this Story: * Send us a tip * Send us a photo or video * Suggest a correction FOLLOW UK POLITICS Like [DEL: :DEL] 9k Enter email for UK P Get Alerts * UK NEWS Ministers are preparing a major expansion of the Government's powers to monitor the email exchanges and website visits of every person in the UK, it was reported on Sunday. Backed by all the pomp and finery the British state can muster, the Gracious Address, to give it its proper title, affords the government the opportunity to draw a line under past difficulties, and turn a somewhat dry recitation of its legislative programme into a demonstration of its political priorities. The shadow cabinet should seize on this year's Queen's speech to provide its own 'shadow Queen's speech' as a way of demonstrating how Britain could be different under Labour. Talking about "what democracy?", "we need a revolution", "big brother" etc. etc. does not make you revolutionaries. Manning the barricades is what does that! Will YOU be there when the people try to wrest control of the country from our erstwhile "leaders"? I think not. Most of you will be contented and middle class and only revolutionary in thought. The government is happy that you are like that. That is where they want you. Why do you vote for them? What if no-one voted in the next election? You cannot have somebody in parliament who has not attracted ANY votes, now can you? Ergo, no politicians! Interesting Ghandi-ish idea, I think. bdvc: So, most posters out there, are not surprised by this. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/social/bdvc/government-snooping-emails- websites-gchq_n_1394423_145499964.html History | Permalink | Share it This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. TARZAN997 4 Fans 18:46 on 02/04/2012 During my time with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office overseas, I served in our embassies in many former communist countries - (Police States). And as everyone knows 'Big-Brother' was always watching you. Listening in to your telephone calls, knowing when you were in or out, thereby able to enter our accommodation - planting bugs (listening devices), searching for incriminating documents/evidence, so that they could try to compromise you. They were able to follow your every move at any time and to listen-in to any conversations that you had. I am sure, that GCHQ will have much more sophisticated listening-devices and meens of keeping tabs on everything you say and do. Oh by the way! this practice is still available in most former communist countries. Once a Commie - always a Commie, they need to know exactly what you are doing, so they can maintain the power and status-quo. This government must be getting worried that one day the citizens of this country will overthrow this false kind of corrupt democracy, which we have been be playing at for hundreds of years and cannot still get it right. They are worried that with all the public unrest about our 'Broken Country', a revolution is on it's way, and therefore they need to keep an eye on everything that everyone is doing. CCTV is just a start, and as you all know it is now everywhere. Who of you want's a 'Police-State'?
