   La secretaria de Estado de Estados Unidos, Hillary Clinton, ha
   anunciado esta noche que su país levantará el veto a las importaciones
   de productos procedentes de Birmania, una de las principales sanciones
   que Washington mantiene al país asiático.

   Clinton hizo el anuncio al comienzo de una reunión con el presidente de
   Birmania, Thein Sein, cuya primera visita a la Asamblea General de la
   ONU estuvo precedida de una intensa campaña para que Estados Unidos
   acabara con esa restricción en la que se implicó incluso la líder de la
   oposición birmana, Aung San Suu Kyi.

   "En reconocimiento del continuo progreso hacia la reforma y en
   respuesta a las peticiones tanto del Gobierno como de la oposición,
   Estados Unidos dará el siguiente paso para normalizar nuestra relación
   comercial", indicó Clinton. "Vamos a comenzar el proceso de relajar las
   restricciones a las importaciones de bienes birmanos a Estados Unidos.
   Esperamos que esto proporcione más oportunidades para que su país venda
   sus productos a nuestro mercado", dijo a Sein.

   Además, el Gobierno del presidente Barack Obama "seguirá consultando
   con el Congreso" y otros actores sobre otras medidas que tomar en apoyo
   a la progresiva apertura del régimen birmano.

Pequeños cambios

   Según Clinton, Estados Unidos reconoce que el Gobierno de Sein está
   "avanzando hacia un cambio democrático" en Birmania, hacia una "mayor
   conexión" del país con la economía global, y trabajando para "poner fin
   a los conflictos étnicos".

   Estados Unidos ha relajado progresivamente sus múltiples sanciones al
   país asiático, que en marzo de 2011 disolvió la junta militar que había
   gobernado el país desde 1962 e instauró en su lugar un Gobierno civil,
   encabezado por el ex general Thein Sein y encargado de emprender una
   serie de reformas democráticas.

   Sein, que intervendrá este jueves ante la Asamblea General de la ONU,
   dio las gracias a Clinton por haber "abierto un nuevo capítulo" en las
   relaciones bilaterales y dijo que el apoyo de EEUU es "un estímulo"
   para continuar por el camino de las reformas.

   La decisión de esta noche y la de eliminar a Sein de la lista de
   personas a quienes se les prohíbe hacer negocios o tener propiedades en
   Estados Unidos, anunciada la semana pasada, se han producido en
   coincidencia con la [74]gira que está realizando por el país Suu Kyi,
   premio Nobel de la Paz.

   La semana pasada la opositora visitó la sede central de la ONU y se
   reunió con su secretario general, Ban Ki-moon, después de haber sido
   recibida en Washington por Obama y de recoger la medalla de oro del
   Congreso, la más alta distinción civil del país

       Ese país ya no existe. Lo que antes era Birmania, ahora es Myanmar.

       Estuve en Birmania unos años atrás y la verdad es que es una pena
       como estaba el país. La gente birmana es super amable y muy
       servicial es una pena que el sistema fuera tan opresor. Para mi fué
       una experiencia grata. Pasamos justo donde estaba "La señora" con
       arresto domiciliario. Estoy muy contenta por ellos de que todo esto
       vaya a cambiar.
