Lovely piece on a really important topic Kate! Lately I’ve been interested in how this idea that feminism is redundant is translated through mass media – because it seems that many in pop culture, from TV writers to news anchors, work on the assumption that feminism is old news. Even if ‘anti feminist’ women have been around since Gloria Steinem & Co first started writing, today’s young women who willing to take the benefits of the movement but are also repelled by the cause are really interesting. But, as your conclusion goes, perhaps Gen Ys and younger will know how to mobilise if or when their freedom is under threat?

Thanks for your reply Emma. It is a really interesting idea how anti-feminism is translated through the mass media. I think when something is for the masses, it reflects what the dominant ideas are and unfortunately, one of these ideas is that feminism is no longer relevant. Yes young women, but women of all ages accept what feminism has accomplished but are willing to reject it outright or criticise it to some degree. Unfortunately, I think you’re right that it won’t be until women’s freedom is seen by the majority of women as being under threat will we have mobilisation. But the unfortunate luck of anti-feminism is that it continues to be powerful in perpetuating the myth that women’s freedom is not under threat and all is good with the world.
