"The president's national security team is taking measures to prevent 9/11 related attacks and to ensure the protection of US persons and facilities abroad," the White House said in a statement. Four Americans including the US ambassador to Libya were killed in an attack on a compound in Benghazi a year ago. The administration initially said the assault grew out of anti-Western protests. Later, however, it turned out that Islamist extremists launched the attack on the September 11 anniversary. The administration was forced for months to defend its handling of the events at Benghazi, with critics charging officials deliberately played down the nature of the attack to protect the president's re-election bid. The White House said its first reports were based on incomplete information. On Wednesday, a foreign ministry building in Benghazi was hit by a powerful blast. It was not immediately known if the blast resulted in casualties. In New York meanwhile, relatives of those killed will attend a service at the two-year-old memorial plaza where they will read the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Readers will also recite victims' names from the 1993 trade center bombing. At the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, where Wednesday's ceremony will include bell-ringing and wreath-laying, officials gathered Tuesday to mark the start of construction on a visitor center. The Pentagon plans a Wednesday morning ceremony for victims' relatives and survivors of the attacks, with wreath-laying and remarks from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other officials, and an afternoon observance for Pentagon workers.
