Legislation allowing same-sex marriages will be brought into force on Tuesday. On that day, couples already in a civil partnership can convert their relationship to marriage. Others will wait until Hogmanay, such as Gerrie and Susan Douglas-Scott. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will be a witness at the ceremony in Edinburgh. Here, we speak to two couples tying the knot on Tuesday. SCOTT AND DAVID BARCLAY Loved-up Scott Barclay and civil partner David will become the first same-sex couple to officially marry in Scotland. Bank manager Scott, 34, and accountant David, 33, will make history when they exchange vows at 8.45am on Tuesday. The pair entered a civil partnership eight years ago after meeting through friends in 2001. David further showed his commitment to Scott when he switched his surname to Barclay. The couple, from Glasgow’s Clarkston, are thrilled to be paving the way at the city’s Registrar’s Office for other gay and lesbian couples who want to tie the knot. Scott said: “Being the first same-sex couple in Scotland to get married would be a huge honour for us. “Although our friends and family treat us like we’re married, the fact is, by law we’re not. We’ve always felt separate from everyone else. “But as of Tuesday we’ll be the same as our mums, dads, friends, brothers and sisters who are married, which is how it should be. “David and I are a normal, mid-30s suburban couple. We’re just like everyone else – we have jobs, we pay our taxes, we pay our bills. “We contribute to society and the fact we can now finally be treated as equals is great.” Their place in history is important to the pair but they’re more excited about what it means for future generations. Scott said: “Tuesday will mean more to the next generation than it will to us. “I would love for our nieces and nephews, if they grew up lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, to know there isn’t an issue with that. “The fight has been fought and when they grow up and meet the love of their lives and want to get married, they’ll be able to do that, no matter their sexuality. “It’s a great thing.” NICK MITCHELL AND PHIL DUFFY Excited Nick Mitchell and Phil Duffy’s marriage certificate was stamped with the number 001. The couple, both former teachers who live in Erskine, Renfrewshire, will be the first same-sex couple to marry at Renfrewshire Registrar’s Office in Paisley. It feels great.” Nick, 68, has been married to two women and had aversion therapy to suppress his feelings. Now a counsellor, he said: “There are a lot of people out there who will be really looking forward to having a marriage rather than a civil partnership. “We are two men who are very much in love and getting married is a demonstration of how we feel about each other and the confidence we have in each other.” Phil added: “My life with Nick has brought me more happiness than I ever thought could happen. “We share love, happiness, peace and an exciting life together. “As two men we have a beautiful, committed, relationship, which is very loving and stable.” * Follow * TheScottishDailyRecord * @Daily_Record * @aimeebev Recently Published First same sex weddings held in Scotland on stroke of midnight as new laws take effect JOE Schofield married Malcolm Brown and Susan Douglas-Scott wed Gerrie Douglas-Scott as the clock chimed 12am and are the first of 17 same sex couples to get hitched today. * Coleen Nolan's problem page: Why is my husband so rude to my family? * Hollywood star Cameron Diaz reported to have married rocker boyfriend Benji Madden in LA Previous Articles Love letters revealing how Marilyn Monroe captured and kept the hearts of her husbands set to go to auction THE turbulent life of Hollywood siren Marilyn Monroe will be laid-bare when a selection of intimate letters penned by her and her lovers go up for aution next month. * Shari Low: 20 years married and the wheels still haven't come off, so here's to 20 more Watch STV player now STV player Catch up on your favourite STV programmes right now Related Tags See Also Love and romance Marriage Gay marriage Sunday Mail Recommended on the Record * Kris Commons Celtic WAG Lisa Hague reveals Old Firm match will be tinged with sadness as it falls on anniversary of her daughter's stillbirth * Wildlife Video: Watch stags lock antlers as they forage for food in one of Scotland's most remote places * Drugs Teenager sues Prozac company claiming his mum's use of the drug left him severely disabled * Perthshire Perthshire house death: Man due to appear in court after woman's body is found * Dundee United FC Dundee United captain Sean Dillon aims to emulate his old pal Willo Flood by getting his hands on the League Cup * SCIAF fundraiser Rutherglen SCIAF to mark 50th anniversary at St Columbkilles * Police are appealing for any information relating to the incident Stonehouse Police Scotland: Scrambler and quad bike theft appeal Recommended in News * Kris Commons Celtic WAG Lisa Hague reveals Old Firm match will be tinged with sadness as it falls on anniversary of her daughter's stillbirth * Wildlife Video: Watch stags lock antlers as they forage for food in one of Scotland's most remote places * Drugs Teenager sues Prozac company claiming his mum's use of the drug left him severely disabled * Perthshire Perthshire house death: Man due to appear in court after woman's body is found * SCIAF fundraiser Rutherglen SCIAF to mark 50th anniversary at St Columbkilles * Police are appealing for any information relating to the incident Stonehouse Police Scotland: Scrambler and quad bike theft appeal * Islamic State Islamic State terrorists pounded by Coalition air strikes as video surfaces claiming one Japanese hostage has been executed IFRAME: //www.facebook.com/plugins/likebox.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fthescottishdailyrecord&width=310&height=290&colorscheme=light&show_faces=true&border_color&stream=false&header=true&appId=326188144080341 Watch STV player now STV player Catch up on your favourite STV programmes right now Most Read in News Marcia Paterson 1.
