British Gov’t Considers Letting Gay Royals Marry, Inherit Throne

kate and williamAs equal marriage moves ahead in Great Britain, members of Parliament are considering how the change in the law would affect the royal family. Labour MP Paul Flynn is rallying for legislation that would allow royals in same-sex relationships to marry (or be in civil partnerships) and for their children to become heirs to the throne.

So if William and Kate’s unborn prince is actually a queen, he’d still be poised to carry on the Windsor line.

Pink News reports:

If accepted, the change to the law could lead to the reign of an openly gay or lesbian king or queen and for their same-sex partner to be recognised as consort. Any children born to the couple through artificial insemination or surrogacy would succeed to the throne so long as the couple are in a same-sex marriage or civil partnership. Current inheritance laws mean that if the couple had a child through adoption, they would not join the line of succession for the throne and it is not clear MPs would seek to change this.

In order to secure a full debate, the amendment needs to be accepted by John Bercow, the speaker of the House of Commons, almost certain as he is a strong supporter of LGBT rights. It is expected to have the support of many Labour, Liberal Democrats and most Conservatives that back David Cameron’s plans to introduce same-sex marriage.

The sticky wicket in this whole business is that the king or queen of England is also the titular head of the Church of England, which officially opposed same-sex marriage. One positive omen is that the rules of succession have already been amended recently to allow female children to inherit the throne.

Female children could already inherit the throne. How do you think we ended up with Queen Elizabeth II? (Or Queen Elizabeth I, for that matter. Or Queen Victoria.)

The recent change was to allow female children to inherit the throne ahead of their younger brothers. Before that, any male child would inherit the throne before any female child. (The aforementioned queens were all brotherless.) Now it goes in order of age.

Anyway, they really need to amend the laws to allow properly registered adopted children to inherit.

I agree that the biological children of a gay monarch and his/her spouse should inherit the throne. But certainly NOT adopted children. It wouldn’t matter if one of the child’s biological parents was black or Asian. The whole point of monarchy is the blood-line.

It would send those Tory bigoted back benchers into a tail spin. Even if there were a gay monarch and he or she married, it wouldn’t be in the Anglican church because it’s opposed to same-sex marriage. I would gloat and rejoice if that were ever to happen.

The era of this notorious freeloading family was over at the end of World War Two. It says a lot that it was only by ONE vote their Kingdom was not abolished. MANY Britians seem them for what they ALWAYS were. History only talks to those who listen.

@Bob LaBlah: A petition was started several years ago and yielded only 3000 signatures out of a population of almost 60 million. It’s not going to be abolished no matter how much you may disagree with it or bad mouth it. There is no consensus to remove it and it would take an act of parliament to make it happen. It shouldn’t even concern people outside the UK anyway, nobody’s business but the British people. It’s for them to decide.

@alexoloughlin: Sadly the media have done a splendid job in making any dislike of these freeloading wastes of time into an act of unpatriotic Britain hating instead of wishing to see the UK not having titular German heads and no state church in any capacity.

I love my nation, I want it to be better, that’s why I’ll keep fighting these anti British freeloading fucksticks.

@Stevenw: So is Tower Bridge, but it doesn’t spend millions on holidays, give free holidays to minor bridges slightly related thrice removed to go prattling around their home nation of German in a shit car looking like whores.

Must be not living in London that makes me resentful of supporting a bunch of Germanic Britain hating xenophobes.

@alexoloughlin: Interesting how you offer no details of WHO it was that started that petition. Could the source had been the Donald Trump of Britian? I am not surprised that Mr. Asshole Trump has not tried the same thing here in regards to Obama’s birth certificate. Stay tuned, he just might if he needs the publicity.

If memory serves me correct I do believe it should have been right about the time the subsidies to students were announced and Prince Charles and his whore Camilla had their car splashed with paint. Am I correct about the timing of the petition? If I am it really makes me wonder if the press had more to do with the amount of signatures NOT disclosed than were disclosed. A lot of people were ticked off and were calling for heads to roll.

Oh, by the way, how did YOU feel about those kids having to dig more into their pockets to pay for an education while these freeloaders road by in a Rolls-Royce paid for with tax payer dollars and had the NERVE to look shocked and scared when their car was spalshed with paint?

      @InscrutableTed:
When was the last time an heir to the British throne adopted a child?

Elizabeth II has/had no brothers just a younger sister – but: Queen Elizabeth I was preceded on the throne of England by her half-brother Edward V1 and then her half-sister Mary I.

Queen Victoria had no brothers and was the daughter of a Duke, not a monarch. She succeeded to the throne because her father’s brothers and sisters (her grandfather George III had 15 children) were all either dead or senile and their children were all either dead or too old, or illegitimate (born out of wedlock).

This stuff can get very complicated.

It seems to me that queer royalty in the UK have generally been bisexual, or have managed to be bisexual, rather than gay. And fairly or very discreet. I’m not sure that will ever change.

@2eo: Good grief, even Republic.org.uk would balk at that kind of stuff. None of the family gets to *anything* without scrutiny; thats why people complain about the cost. As for pratting around Germany dressed like whores – seriously, if you are sitting on that kind of story, do please call the Daily Mail and reveal all forthwith; I’m sure the editor would have an aneurysm out of sheer joy.

You know, you should join Republic’s campaign – if must hate the monarchy, at least Republic would give you decidely more accurate reasons to do so.

And no I don’t live in London; I just used to visit friends who lived there.
