- Ligne n°49 : What makes a patriot? People through the ages have carried out both
- Ligne n°50 : horrible and wonderful acts under the banner of patriotism. How then
- Ligne n°51 : are we to define it? The concept of patriotism is just as debated and
- Ligne n°52 : relevant today as it was during the Civil War. If our nation is to
- Ligne n°53 : survive its current challenges, the definition of a true patriot must
- Ligne n°54 : be clear.
- Ligne n°55 : So, what is true patriotism? Only 57 percent of U.S. citizens over 18
- Ligne n°56 : described themselves as either “extremelyâ€ or “veryâ€ patriotic
- Ligne n°57 : in a study by AARP. Can our nation really survive on 57 percent? I
- Ligne n°58 : believe these shoddy Âratings are the result of widespread misuse of
- Ligne n°59 : the term “patriot.â€
- Ligne n°60 : Many believe patriotism to be blind obedience to one's nation. Samuel
- Ligne n°61 : Johnson, one of the most quoted European writers in history, said,
- Ligne n°62 : “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.â€ Are patriots
- Ligne n°63 : really just a bunch of yes-men who bow to the president's every whim?
- Ligne n°64 : If so, one wonders how we have managed to remain a democracy all these
- Ligne n°65 : years.
- Ligne n°66 : I have to disagree with Johnson. I prefer to quote Carl Schurz, the
- Ligne n°67 : German revolutionary and, later, American political scientist who said,
- Ligne n°68 : “My country … if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set
- Ligne n°69 : right.â€ Schurz's idea of patriotism is often referred to today as
- Ligne n°70 : “loyal opposition.â€ This means seeking to change the social
- Ligne n°71 : behavior of your country out of feelings of national love and patriotic
- Ligne n°72 : duty. Loyal Âopposition is not the blind obedience of the uninformed
- Ligne n°73 : and ignorant but rather active and sensible Âreconstruction of a system
- Ligne n°74 : that one believes to be Âessentially good but critically flawed.
- Ligne n°75 : As a student at a somewhat liberal school in an Âexceedingly liberal
- Ligne n°76 : state, I constantly find myself Âannoyed when my peers talk about
- Ligne n°77 : “moving to Canadaâ€ or some other nonsense. My response? “Go
- Ligne n°78 : ahead. Please move to Canada. It'll be much easier for the rest of us
- Ligne n°79 : to fix things without your constant whining.â€ While some may consider
- Ligne n°80 : this harsh, I invite anyone who can't see the good in America, despite
- Ligne n°81 : her blemishes, to leave.
- Ligne n°82 : We must love our country enough to stay and work to change it for the
- Ligne n°83 : better. We must follow the example of civil rights Âactivist James
- Ligne n°84 : Baldwin, who said, “I love America more than any other country in
- Ligne n°85 : this world, and, Âexactly for this reason, I insist on the right to
- Ligne n°86 : criticize her perpetually.â€ He and other members of the then-loyal
- Ligne n°87 : opposition understood that the desire to change America is itself a
- Ligne n°88 : demonstration of one's love for the nation.
- Ligne n°89 : Some say that there is little reason to love America. I don't believe
- Ligne n°90 : any rational person would accept this. Sure, our country has made
- Ligne n°91 : mistakes throughout history, but while the ethics behind some of these
- Ligne n°92 : Âdecisions were admittedly murky, it is not right to blame the entire
- Ligne n°93 : nation for a few morally ambiguous politicians. After all, think of the
- Ligne n°94 : many wonderful contributions America has made to the world. The the
- Ligne n°95 : cotton gin, steamboat, cylinder printing press, telephone, light bulb,
- Ligne n°96 : gasoline-powered car, and even air conditioning were American
- Ligne n°97 : inventions. The first slave to patent an invention did so in America,
- Ligne n°98 : and the modern rocket was developed here. The first flight across the
- Ligne n°99 : Atlantic took off from America. Think of where the world would be now
- Ligne n°100 : were it not for this country.
- Ligne n°101 : Despite our achievements, it is important that we not lose sight of the
- Ligne n°102 : big picture. Part of loyal opposition in modern America is a long-term
- Ligne n°103 : world view. We must look into the future and decide what role we will
- Ligne n°104 : play in it. As Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana said, “A
- Ligne n°105 : man's feet must be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey
- Ligne n°106 : the world.â€
- Ligne n°107 : Many third-world nations receive regular and Âcrucial support from
- Ligne n°108 : America. Our relationship with China will become more significant as
- Ligne n°109 : that country's wealth and power grow. It will take the practical
- Ligne n°110 : Âinvestment of time and resources by loyal activists to ensure
- Ligne n°111 : America's continued prosperity.
- Ligne n°112 : In the words of Norman Thomas, “If you want a symbolic gesture, don't
- Ligne n°113 : burn the flag; wash it.â€ F

- Ligne n°161 : Very interesting perspective. I don't have that problem with living in
- Ligne n°162 : a liberal area like you do because my state and city are extremely
- Ligne n°163 : democratic, but there are some of them. I find that close mindedness is
