- Ligne n°87 : In reading the comments of some Iraq war veterans on the tenth
- Ligne n°88 : anniversary of the Iraq war, you cannot escape the conclusion that
- Ligne n°89 : American patriotism is in clear decline. The word "patriotism" comes
- Ligne n°90 : from the Latin "patria," meaning "native land," which is in turn
- Ligne n°91 : related to the Latin "pater," meaning "father." "Patriotism" thus
- Ligne n°92 : invokes a paternal relationship. It embodies love and respect for your
- Ligne n°93 : country, and the willingness to protect it, just as a father loves,
- Ligne n°94 : respects and seeks to protect his children. Feelings of patriotism are
- Ligne n°95 : therefore most intense when your country faces a common enemy. When we
- Ligne n°96 : need to protect it from the invaders, along with our family, home, and
- Ligne n°97 : possessions that are a part of it, we band together as one and fight to
- Ligne n°98 : the death.
- Ligne n°99 : In contrast, it is hard to feel patriotism and risk dying for your
- Ligne n°100 : country when the cause for doing so is not clear or defensible, and
- Ligne n°101 : your country is not directly threatened. Since World War II, too many
- Ligne n°102 : wars for too many causes, and for unclear and ill-defined purposes,
- Ligne n°103 : have eroded feelings of patriotism in everyday Americans. This was the
- Ligne n°104 : case when we attacked Iraq on the suspicion that it had weapons of mass
- Ligne n°105 : destruction. The same would hold true if we attacked Iran to prevent it
- Ligne n°106 : from acquiring nuclear weapons. And, today, even after nearly twelves
- Ligne n°107 : years of war in Afghanistan, many Americans are still questioning why
- Ligne n°108 : we got into that war in the first place.
- Ligne n°109 :
- Ligne n°110 : Nowadays, Americans are not conscripted to serve in the military, nor
- Ligne n°111 : do they volunteer to serve out of an abundance of patriotism. They join
- Ligne n°112 : the armed forces mostly to get a job. Most of those fighting in
- Ligne n°113 : Afghanistan right now would prefer to be at home, if only they could
- Ligne n°114 : find a job and a better income there.
- Ligne n°115 :
- Ligne n°116 : The decline in patriotism in America has grown more pronounced as many
- Ligne n°117 : Americans have come to feel that their country has abandoned them. This
- Ligne n°118 : is especially true of the lower classes, who are increasingly aware of
- Ligne n°119 : the unfairness of the country's growing wealth inequality. As those who
- Ligne n°120 : return from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to poverty and joblessness
- Ligne n°121 : in America frequently ask: What did we fight for? How can you love your
- Ligne n°122 : country as you do your father, if it does nothing to help you find a
- Ligne n°123 : job, secure a good life for your family, or enroll your kids in a good
- Ligne n°124 : school?
- Ligne n°125 :
- Ligne n°126 : Still, it is not only the poor or the disintegrating middle class in
- Ligne n°127 : America that feels less patriotic; the top one percent feels the same.
- Ligne n°128 : They think that the country is taxing their income unfairly and giving
- Ligne n°129 : their money to those who have not worked for it or don't deserve it in
- Ligne n°130 : the first place. In response, they are stashing their money in other
- Ligne n°131 : countries to avoid paying taxes. This is not necessarily surprising.
- Ligne n°132 : For many of the rich, all countries, including the United States, are
- Ligne n°133 : only places to do business. Not much patriotism there.
- Ligne n°134 :
- Ligne n°135 : The diminished patriotism in most developed countries can also be seen
- Ligne n°136 : as an expression of modernity. In the modern world, tradition,
- Ligne n°137 : religion, family and country are now defining us less. We are expected
- Ligne n°138 : to be scientific, broad-minded and individualistic. Applying ancient
- Ligne n°139 : rules of religion, family and country is now considered backward and
- Ligne n°140 : underdeveloped. Our world is moving toward a more secular and universal
- Ligne n°141 : liberal democracy.
- Ligne n°142 :
- Ligne n°143 : One consequence of this trend is that it is now becoming less and less
- Ligne n°144 : acceptable for a civilized country to declare war against another, no
- Ligne n°145 : matter what the reason. As a result, even our historical military
- Ligne n°146 : heroes are falling out of favor. Harry Patch, the last surviving
- Ligne n°147 : soldier of WWI said, "War is organized murder, and nothing else. There
- Ligne n°148 : is nothing heroic about killing for your country. When you come right
- Ligne n°149 : down to it, enemy combatants are defending their country from the
- Ligne n°150 : foreign American attackers." Today, many Americans feel the same way.
- Ligne n°151 : As they see it, American soldiers are invading foreign countries
- Ligne n°152 : primarily for the benefit of the oil companies and other multinational
- Ligne n°153 : corporations. They do so because they are getting paid for it. They
- Ligne n°154 : are, in fact, just mercenaries.
- Ligne n°155 :
- Ligne n°156 : Most of the wars that America was, or is, involved in, do not generate
- Ligne n°157 : national enthusiasm. Those in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan all
- Ligne n°158 : failed to stir nationalistic emotions in the American public. Because
- Ligne n°159 : no important American national interest was really at stake, no one
- Ligne n°160 : cared about these wars, except when the body bags came back. All the
- Ligne n°161 : wars were like financial transactions, which involve little emotion.
- Ligne n°162 : Moreover, unlike World War II, the end of hostilities did not engender
- Ligne n°163 : feelings of pride and victory. It turned out that U.S. forces were
- Ligne n°164 : better at initiating these wars than at winning them.
- Ligne n°165 :
- Ligne n°166 : America's Global War on Terror has also proved irrelevant to most
- Ligne n°167 : Americans. While the U.S. was expending trillions of dollars in a
- Ligne n°168 : futile effort to pacify Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Awakening turned
- Ligne n°169 : the Middle East upside down without organized warfare. In hindsight,
- Ligne n°170 : the War on Terror now appears pointless.
- Ligne n°171 :
- Ligne n°172 : It is probably still true that America is by far the greatest country
- Ligne n°173 : on earth, partly because it projects ideals of freedom, liberty and
- Ligne n°174 : human dignity. To remain great, however, we must hold on to those
- Ligne n°175 : ideals and continue to promote them.
- Ligne n°176 :
- Ligne n°177 : In recent decades, America's inconsistency in pursuing its foundational
- Ligne n°178 : ideals has diminished its citizens' feelings of loyalty and patriotism.
- Ligne n°179 : America always talks about human rights and often bullies small
- Ligne n°180 : countries over their human rights performance, especially when it is
- Ligne n°181 : politically expedient. But when human rights concerns conflict with our
- Ligne n°182 : interests, our ethical beliefs take a back seat nearly every time. The
- Ligne n°183 : United States has plenty of allies whose human rights performance
- Ligne n°184 : ranges from questionable to awful. Saudi Arabia and China are
- Ligne n°185 : not-so-shining examples.
- Ligne n°186 :
- Ligne n°187 : America's moral failings were especially brought to light with the
- Ligne n°188 : events of 9/11. After three thousand Americans were killed, the
- Ligne n°189 : government felt it had to take some action that proved it was still the
- Ligne n°190 : toughest guy on the block. The trouble was, there was no country to
- Ligne n°191 : blame or retaliate against, so we attacked Iraq, which had almost no
- Ligne n°192 : connection to our loss. As a result, the war failed to stimulate our
- Ligne n°193 : feelings of patriotism.
- Ligne n°194 :
- Ligne n°195 : Worse yet, those who instigated that disastrous war were never
- Ligne n°196 : disciplined or indicted. Nor were any of the senior officials in the
- Ligne n°197 : Bush administration who authorized torture and renditions in either
- Ligne n°198 : Iraq or Afghanistan ever faced with indictment or even serious
- Ligne n°199 : investigation. And now, with the increased use of drones under Obama,
- Ligne n°200 : and the frequent collateral killing of innocents, America may be coming
- Ligne n°201 : close to losing totally both the dwindling patriotism of its citizens
- Ligne n°202 : and its claim on moral authority in the world.
- Ligne n°203 :
- Ligne n°204 : What does all this mean for the future? The United States better think
- Ligne n°205 : long and hard about any future wars in which it chooses to be engaged.
- Ligne n°206 : If our national interests are not directly threatened and our cause not
- Ligne n°207 : clearly justified, the government may find it very hard to recruit
- Ligne n°208 : young Americans who are patriotic enough to be willing to give their
- Ligne n°209 : lives for their country, no matter what the salary. It may also find
- Ligne n°210 : that the world at large, which is rapidly adopting its own values of
- Ligne n°211 : liberal democracy, may well be far less tolerant of an America that
- Ligne n°212 : seeks to dominate weaker nations for no other reason than its own
- Ligne n°213 : self-interest.
