- Ligne n°150 :
- Ligne n°151 : And, like most "isms," Kramer says, nationalism carries with it both

- Ligne n°166 : kinds of other people: fears of other religions or races or cultures or
- Ligne n°167 : ethnic groups or homosexuals. This fear can be mobilized for violence
- Ligne n°168 : and scapegoating. It can lead people to feel aggrieved and constantly

- Ligne n°170 :
- Ligne n°171 : In various ways, he adds, "nationalism can contribute to human progress
- Ligne n°172 : and freedom and education and economic vitality, or it can contribute
- Ligne n°173 : to violence, fear and international conflicts."
- Ligne n°174 :
- Ligne n°175 : Nationalism, according to Kramer, is often in full flower on national
- Ligne n°176 : holidays, during major sports events and at public memorials for
- Ligne n°177 : deceased military troops. And nationalistic symbols, rituals and
- Ligne n°178 : rhetoric are especially ramped up as the country moves toward a

- Ligne n°182 :
- Ligne n°183 : He's not kidding.
- Ligne n°184 :
- Ligne n°185 : Patriotism permeates contemporary American politics. As do accusations
- Ligne n°186 : of unpatriotic behavior. Of course, the word "patriot" is a subjective
- Ligne n°187 : characterization, and most politicians use it as code for someone who
- Ligne n°188 : shares their beliefs.
- Ligne n°189 :
- Ligne n°190 : Americans "are a patriotic people," said Mitt Romney at the recent
- Ligne n°191 : Republican presidential debate in Orlando. "We place our hand over our
- Ligne n°192 : heart during the playing of the national anthem. No other people on
- Ligne n°193 : Earth do that." So does that mean that people who don't place their
- Ligne n°194 : hands over their hearts while the anthem is played are not patriots?
- Ligne n°195 :
- Ligne n°196 : Speaking to a Tea Party gathering in New Hampshire on Labor Day
- Ligne n°197 : weekend, possible presidential candidate Sarah Palin said, "We patriots
- Ligne n°198 : should not focus on petty political squabbles and media game sound
- Ligne n°199 : bites. The Tea Party has got to be focused on the broader, much more
- Ligne n°200 : important goals of this movement — replace Obama." Does that mean that
- Ligne n°201 : someone who supports the president of the United States is not a
- Ligne n°202 : patriot?
- Ligne n°203 :
- Ligne n°204 : From the Democratic angle, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, speaking
- Ligne n°205 : recently on the Tavis Smiley Show, suggested that members of the Tea
- Ligne n°206 : Party should "stop being Tea Party people instead of patriots and
- Ligne n°207 : Americans." Does that mean a Tea Partier cannot also be a patriot and
- Ligne n°208 : an American?
- Ligne n°209 :
- Ligne n°210 : And Rick Perry in a new Web ad intones, "We don't need a president who
- Ligne n°211 : apologizes for America. I believe in America. I believe in her purpose
- Ligne n°212 : and her promise. ... God bless the United States of America."
- Ligne n°213 :
- Ligne n°214 : International Nationalism
- Ligne n°215 :
- Ligne n°216 : Though the United States may have its own brand of nationalism, most
- Ligne n°217 : countries have a strong streak of patriotic pride.
- Ligne n°218 :
- Ligne n°219 : There are times when nationalism becomes more prominent on a global
- Ligne n°220 : scale and other periods when it is displaced by other issues, says
- Ligne n°221 : Peter Rutland, who writes the NationalismWatch blog. The last big wave
- Ligne n°222 : was the post-Communist 1990s, when Yugoslavia became a handful of
- Ligne n°223 : republics.
- Ligne n°224 :
- Ligne n°225 : Now we are experiencing another wave, Rutland says. "The economic rise
- Ligne n°226 : of the BRICs [Brazil, Russia, India and China] and other middle-income
- Ligne n°227 : countries is often accompanied by nationalist assertion, China being
- Ligne n°228 : the obvious case, also Turkey and many others."
- Ligne n°229 :
- Ligne n°230 : Increased globalization, he adds, "produces a countereffect of
- Ligne n°231 : increased national assertion, worries about the loss of identity. Then
- Ligne n°232 : we see a new wave of democratization — starting with the color
- Ligne n°233 : revolutions in the former Soviet Union and now the Arab spring."
- Ligne n°234 :
- Ligne n°235 : He cites the book From Voting to Violence by Jack Snyder, which shows
- Ligne n°236 : that democratization often leads "to an uptick on nationalist politics
- Ligne n°237 : as media and political parties use nationalism as an organizing
- Ligne n°238 : principle for the new political situation."
- Ligne n°239 :
- Ligne n°240 : The Arab spring, for example, is leading to more nationalist rhetoric
- Ligne n°241 : and possibly policy changes to follow in places like Egypt, he says.
- Ligne n°242 : And "Turkey shows that Islamism and nationalism can go together."
- Ligne n°243 :
- Ligne n°244 : — Linton Weeks
- Ligne n°245 :
- Ligne n°246 : After watching that ad, CNN's Carol Costello asked: "Should patriotism
- Ligne n°247 : be a political tool?" She then pointed out that "patriotism has worked
- Ligne n°248 : for Democrats, too, during the 2008 campaign. Vice presidential
- Ligne n°249 : candidate Joe Biden said wealthy Americans should pay more taxes
- Ligne n°250 : because it's time to be patriotic."
- Ligne n°251 :
- Ligne n°252 : The Patriotic Center
- Ligne n°253 :
- Ligne n°254 : Patriotism, nationalism. Is there a difference?
- Ligne n°255 :
- Ligne n°256 : Peter Rutland, a professor of government at Wesleyan University in
- Ligne n°257 : Middletown, Conn., says that in the U.S., the word "nationalism" often
- Ligne n°258 : has negative connotations. "So we talk instead about patriotism."
- Ligne n°259 :
- Ligne n°260 : He says, "Other people are nationalists; we are patriots."
- Ligne n°261 :
- Ligne n°262 : But for the sake of argument, the terms "nationalism" and "patriotism"
- Ligne n°263 : are pretty much interchangeable, Rutland says. He studies this instinct
- Ligne n°264 : on a global level and posts observations on his NationalismWatch blog.
- Ligne n°265 :
- Ligne n°266 : Rutland, Kramer and others who track nationalism point out that U.S.
- Ligne n°267 : nationalism has swelled since 2001. Countrywide concerns about a
- Ligne n°268 : faltering economy and a flood of immigration only intensify the notion
- Ligne n°269 : of nationalism.
- Ligne n°270 :
- Ligne n°271 : Both liberal and conservative politicians have been adapting their
- Ligne n°272 : language, Rutland says, "to try to appeal to the patriotic median
- Ligne n°273 : voter."
- Ligne n°274 :
- Ligne n°275 : Rutland says that in light of that quest for the patriotic center,
- Ligne n°276 : Obama's language has been particularly striking. "If you read his
- Ligne n°277 : speech announcing his candidacy in Springfield, Ill., or his inaugural
- Ligne n°278 : address, you see a heavy emphasis on the common national narrative —
- Ligne n°279 : the sacrifices of Gettysburg, the legacy of past generations, etc. —
- Ligne n°280 : classic nationalist/patriotic imagery."
- Ligne n°281 :
- Ligne n°282 : Shovels To Snowshoes
- Ligne n°283 :
- Ligne n°284 : That nod toward nationalism served Obama well in the 2008 election.
- Ligne n°285 :
- Ligne n°286 : It has also worked for a number of business people, such as Todd
- Ligne n°287 : Lipscomb. Not too long ago, Lipscomb was an executive in a California
- Ligne n°288 : tech company. He lived in and traveled through Asia and the Pacific Rim
- Ligne n°289 : for seven years. As his American company's global business increased,
- Ligne n°290 : Lipscomb began to worry about the folks — their jobs and financial
- Ligne n°291 : futures — back in the U.S.
- Ligne n°292 :
- Ligne n°293 : Four years ago, he resigned from his company, moved home to California
- Ligne n°294 : and launched the website Made in USA Forever. He sells products —
- Ligne n°295 : everything from shovels to snowshoes — that are domestically
- Ligne n°296 : manufactured.
- Ligne n°297 :
- Ligne n°298 : "Stand with us to protect America's ability to produce, create jobs,
- Ligne n°299 : and remain a world leader," the website intones.
- Ligne n°300 :
- Ligne n°301 : From his home in San Clemente, Lipscomb says "sales are surging.
- Ligne n°302 : Conversely to the economic trends, the bad news has energized my
- Ligne n°303 : customer base."
- Ligne n°304 :
- Ligne n°305 : Customers know "they are doing something real for our economy,"
- Ligne n°306 : Lipscomb says. "Every item is made here from U.S.A. components, so from
- Ligne n°307 : the farmer that grows the cotton through every step of the way it helps
- Ligne n°308 : our economy and creates jobs in a virtuous circle."
- Ligne n°309 :
- Ligne n°310 : There are many similar sites for domestically manufactured products,
- Ligne n°311 : including Made in USA and the Made in America store.
- Ligne n°312 :
- Ligne n°313 : Lipscomb's website offers more than 2,800 products from over 480
- Ligne n°314 : "mostly small, family-owned business," Lipscomb says. But he adds,
- Ligne n°315 : "Where we are weak is in electronics."
- Ligne n°316 :
- Ligne n°317 : Lipscomb has written a couple of books about his experience, including
- Ligne n°318 : Re-Made in America: How We Can Restore Jobs, Retool Manufacturing and
- Ligne n°319 : Compete with the World. The issue of nationalism or patriotism is not a
- Ligne n°320 : partisan concern, he says. He has been asked to appear on Ed Shultz's
- Ligne n°321 : progressive radio show as well as the conservative Fox & Friends
- Ligne n°322 : national TV program.
- Ligne n°323 :
- Ligne n°324 : He says his website attracts people of all stripes. "Conservatives,
- Ligne n°325 : progressives, outdoorsmen, union members, immigrants, and many, many
- Ligne n°326 : other groups come together on the website as Americans."
- Ligne n°327 :
- Ligne n°328 : In the end, he says, "this is not a red state or blue state issue, but
- Ligne n°329 : truly a red, white and blue one."
