- Ligne n°58 : Recruiters Recall Patriotism of Post-9/11 America
- Ligne n°59 :
- Ligne n°60 : By Lisa Daniel
- Ligne n°61 : American Forces Press Service
- Ligne n°62 :
- Ligne n°63 : WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2011 – Like so many Americans, Army Sgt. Cheri
- Ligne n°64 : Depenbrock watched the horror of 9/11 unfold from her office
- Ligne n°65 : television. What was different for the Army recruiter was how it
- Ligne n°66 : changed her job in the weeks after.
- Ligne n°67 :
- Ligne n°68 : Click photo for screen-resolution image
- Ligne n°69 : Like other military recruiters, Army Master Sgt. Juan Dozier witnessed
- Ligne n°70 : a spike in patriotism following Sept. 11, 2001, that led many Americans
- Ligne n°71 : into recruiting stations. U.S. Army courtesy photo

- Ligne n°74 :
- Ligne n°75 : In seven years of helping ensure the Army met its recruiting goals,
- Ligne n°76 : Depenbrock was used to reaching out to young people, telling them what
- Ligne n°77 : the Army could do for them, and mostly answering their questions about
- Ligne n°78 : how they could get their college paid for by signing up.
- Ligne n°79 :
- Ligne n°80 : “It was almost always for college, for money, and for having a
- Ligne n°81 : full-time job,” she said, referring to the reasons people enlisted.
- Ligne n°82 :
- Ligne n°83 : Sept. 11, 2001, changed that. In the days, weeks and months thereafter,
- Ligne n°84 : Depenbrock, like military recruiters around the nation, watched in
- Ligne n°85 : amazement from her Cincinnati office as people who never would have
- Ligne n°86 : thought of joining -- or rejoining, as many would have it -- approached
- Ligne n°87 : recruiters with the sole purpose of defending America.
- Ligne n°88 :
- Ligne n°89 : “It was amazing the people walking into that office, the ages,” she
- Ligne n°90 : said. “We had so many prior-service folks wanting to come back. I was
- Ligne n°91 : amazed at how many older people tried. I know some of them were in
- Ligne n°92 : their fifties. And, military-wise, we couldn’t do anything for them.”
- Ligne n°93 :
- Ligne n°94 : Some younger people with prior service did rejoin, Depenbrock said, and
- Ligne n°95 : the first-time recruits were different. While patriotism has always
- Ligne n°96 : driven young people to service, it was almost always matched with a
- Ligne n°97 : desire for college money or new opportunities. Suddenly, they weren’t
- Ligne n°98 : asking about money, she said.
- Ligne n°99 :
- Ligne n°100 :
- Ligne n°101 : “It was all about the patriotism,” Depenbrock said. “They didn’t care
- Ligne n°102 : about anything else. Money had nothing do with it. I swear, I think
- Ligne n°103 : half those kids would have joined if we hadn’t paid them.”
- Ligne n°104 :
- Ligne n°105 : An annual Pentagon survey of young people’s propensity to join the
- Ligne n°106 : military showed an 8-percent increase among young men likely to enlist
- Ligne n°107 : immediately after 9/11, and remained high until 2005, a Defense
- Ligne n°108 : Department official said.
- Ligne n°109 :
- Ligne n°110 : One of those young men was William Grigsby, now an Army staff sergeant
- Ligne n°111 : who enlisted in early 2002. “The events of 9/11 had everything to do
- Ligne n°112 : with my decision to enlist,” he said.
- Ligne n°113 :
- Ligne n°114 : Grigsby, an aircraft electrician on a three-year detail as a recruiter
- Ligne n°115 : in Houston, graduated high school in June 2001 and was indecisive about
- Ligne n°116 : his plans, first considering the Army, then college, and then deciding
- Ligne n°117 : against both.
- Ligne n°118 :
- Ligne n°119 : Three months later, “I was working a dead-end job at a grocery store,”
- Ligne n°120 : Grigsby recalled. He was driving home from the night shift on the
- Ligne n°121 : morning of 9/11 when he heard a news report about two hijacked planes
- Ligne n°122 : being flown into the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
- Ligne n°123 :
- Ligne n°124 : Almost immediately after, Grigsby said, his mind went back to joining
- Ligne n°125 : the Army. As U.S. forces moved into Afghanistan to dismantle al-Qaida
- Ligne n°126 : and their Taliban backers, “I watched in awe as our military forces
- Ligne n°127 : took control of the country,” he said, adding that he had no
- Ligne n°128 : reservations at the prospects of deploying to war.
- Ligne n°129 :
- Ligne n°130 : Recruiters from around the country remember post-9/11 as a time when
- Ligne n°131 : many potential recruits came to them.
- Ligne n°132 :
- Ligne n°133 : Army Master Sgt. Juan Dozier calls himself “a recruiter of two
- Ligne n°134 : different generations.” There was the generation before 9/11 -- his
- Ligne n°135 : generation -- who enlisted for various benefits the military could
- Ligne n°136 : provide.
- Ligne n°137 :
- Ligne n°138 : “There wasn’t so much of a sense of purpose, of ‘What can I do for my
- Ligne n°139 : country?’” he said. “It was more, ‘I need the training or education
- Ligne n°140 : money.’”
- Ligne n°141 :
- Ligne n°142 : Dozier didn’t begrudge them -- he was one of them. Raised in the tough
- Ligne n°143 : Southside Chicago neighborhood of Englewood, Dozier enlisted in the
- Ligne n°144 : Army in 1989 as a way out.
- Ligne n°145 :
- Ligne n°146 : “The only thing I wanted to do was have different scenery,” he said.
- Ligne n°147 :
- Ligne n°148 : “They took a chance on me being from Southside Chicago,” Dozier said,
- Ligne n°149 : adding that his recruiters asked him to take a bus to meet them outside
- Ligne n°150 : of his neighborhood because they were concerned about violence there.
- Ligne n°151 :
- Ligne n°152 : “The only time they came and got me was when it was time for boot
- Ligne n°153 : camp,” he said.
- Ligne n°154 :
- Ligne n°155 : After serving as a motor transportation operator in Germany, then
- Ligne n°156 : California and Texas, Dozier was working as a recruiter in Columbia,
- Ligne n°157 : S.C., when 9/11 occurred. People began flowing into the recruiting
- Ligne n°158 : station, and they were prepared to fight, he said.
- Ligne n°159 :
- Ligne n°160 : Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and his predecessor, Robert M. Gates,
- Ligne n°161 : have praised the more than 3 million young people who have joined the
- Ligne n°162 : military since 9/11, all knowing they likely would go to war.
- Ligne n°163 :
- Ligne n°164 : Dozier compared their mindset to that of peacetime recruits caught off
- Ligne n°165 : guard by military interventions such as the Persian Gulf War that began
- Ligne n°166 : in 1990.
- Ligne n°167 :
- Ligne n°168 : “Back then kids were saying, ‘I didn’t join for this, and a lot of them
- Ligne n°169 : were trying to get out,’” he said. “These kids now, they know what
- Ligne n°170 : they’re signing up for. For most of them, they know war is part of the
- Ligne n°171 : job.”
- Ligne n°172 :
- Ligne n°173 : Recruiters say they now hear a mixture of reasons for enlisting, with
- Ligne n°174 : many potential recruits still citing patriotism, but a growing number
- Ligne n°175 : also looking for benefits such as health care.
- Ligne n°176 :
- Ligne n°177 : “When they come in now, they’re looking at benefits,” Depenbrock said.
- Ligne n°178 : “They’re not talking about the GI Bill. -- they’re talking about a
- Ligne n°179 : safety net.”
