- Ligne n°143 : On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared its independence
- Ligne n°144 : from King George III and England. Independence Day is marked by
- Ligne n°145 : celebrations and the American people expressing patriotism in a variety
- Ligne n°146 : of ways.
- Ligne n°147 :
- Ligne n°148 : Yet, other than special sales events, what is expected of American
- Ligne n°149 : corporations when it comes to the core value of patriotism, which is
- Ligne n°150 : love of country? The U.S.-based large global companies' answer to this
- Ligne n°151 : question is "very little," except for the heralding of building modern
- Ligne n°152 : weapons of mass destruction and mass surveillance under government

- Ligne n°154 :
- Ligne n°155 : It is useful to apply several other yardsticks for these U.S.-chartered
- Ligne n°156 : companies, who rose to great profits with American workers, were bailed
- Ligne n°157 : out by American taxpayers when they were crashing and, even sometimes,
- Ligne n°158 : were saved from trouble abroad by the U.S. Marines. After all, for more
- Ligne n°159 : than 130 years, corporate lawyers have persuaded the U.S. Supreme Court
- Ligne n°160 : that corporations are "persons." With this status they have many of the
- Ligne n°161 : same constitutional rights given to real persons, and often use their
- Ligne n°162 : concentrated power to gain additional privileges and immunities.
- Ligne n°163 :
- Ligne n°164 : So, if corporations want to be people, why not judge them as such?
- Ligne n°165 :
- Ligne n°166 : In 1996 and in 2013, I wrote to the CEOs of more than 100 large
- Ligne n°167 : chartered corporations to ask a simple question: "Would the CEO stand
- Ligne n°168 : up at the annual shareholders meeting and, in the name of the
- Ligne n°169 : corporation (not the Board of Directors), pledge allegiance to the
- Ligne n°170 : United States and the Republic for which it stands … with liberty and
- Ligne n°171 : justice for all?" Of the dozens of responses, only one company —
- Ligne n°172 : Federated Department Stores — thought it was a good idea.
- Ligne n°173 :
- Ligne n°174 : This was not surprising, as corporations are not held to the same
- Ligne n°175 : social norms and expectations as real people. These behemoths diverge
- Ligne n°176 : from the expected norms of behavior imposed on real people. Unlike
- Ligne n°177 : regular people, corporations can pollute air, water, soil and
- Ligne n°178 : workplaces and often get away with this silent form of violence by
- Ligne n°179 : simply asserting it is a necessary trade-off for jobs. Chronic
- Ligne n°180 : polluters, such as the coal industry, continue to rely on this tired,
- Ligne n°181 : either/or "jobs argument."
- Ligne n°182 :
- Ligne n°183 : Real people do not get together and demand freebies with the threat of
- Ligne n°184 : moving their work to foreign countries. Corporations do this all the
- Ligne n°185 : time, exporting whole industries through corporate-managed trade
- Ligne n°186 : agreements and the outsourcing of American jobs to serf labor regimes
- Ligne n°187 : abroad, grotesquely encouraged by tax laws corporate lobbyists ram
- Ligne n°188 : through Congress.
- Ligne n°189 :
- Ligne n°190 : Regular people are expected to pay taxes. Global corporations have
- Ligne n°191 : manipulated the system with their power over Congress so that they ship
- Ligne n°192 : their paper profits to overseas tax havens through accounting gimmicks,
- Ligne n°193 : or demand credits, loopholes and deferrals domestically that many giant
- Ligne n°194 : companies like General Electric and Verizon use to avoid paying any
- Ligne n°195 : federal income taxes on billions of dollars of U.S.-based profits.
- Ligne n°196 : Indeed, some companies regularly get money from the U.S. Treasury and
- Ligne n°197 : have a negative income tax.
- Ligne n°198 :
- Ligne n°199 : Despite escaping their responsibilities to pay their fair share of
- Ligne n°200 : taxes to Uncle Sam, these companies still expect governmental public
- Ligne n°201 : services and infrastructure, law enforcement, a myriad of subsidies,
- Ligne n°202 : patent monopolies, public education and worker training payments — to
- Ligne n°203 : name a few of the benefits funded by the taxpaying American people.
- Ligne n°204 :
- Ligne n°205 : Real people are expected to sacrifice their lives and their customary
- Ligne n°206 : work in times of war. Corporations smack their impersonal lips,
- Ligne n°207 : savoring the huge contracts and profits coming from the Pentagon. They
- Ligne n°208 : do not sacrifice by stepping up their tax payments to help pay for the
- Ligne n°209 : war or modestly pricing their armaments. Just the opposite, they exact
- Ligne n°210 : greater profits at times of national crises.
- Ligne n°211 :
- Ligne n°212 : The monetized corporate brain is oblivious to even the most basic forms
- Ligne n°213 : of loyalty to their home country. For example, the drug industry, which
- Ligne n°214 : charges Americans the highest prices in the world, receives huge
- Ligne n°215 : subsidies from the National Institutes of Health in the form of free
- Ligne n°216 : taxpayer funded research and development, including clinical trials
- Ligne n°217 : along with large tax credits for their own research. Drug industry
- Ligne n°218 : profits are among the highest of all industries and drug companies are
- Ligne n°219 : among the biggest criminal offenders of federal laws.
- Ligne n°220 :
- Ligne n°221 : So what have the U.S. drug companies done by way of gratitude? They
- Ligne n°222 : have outsourced production of 80% of the ingredients in medicines sold
- Ligne n°223 : in our country mainly to China and India to sidestep safety controls
- Ligne n°224 : that would be enforced in the United States. Americans have died from
- Ligne n°225 : contaminated imports. Not having drugs like penicillin manufactured
- Ligne n°226 : stateside any more could pose a threat to our national security.
- Ligne n°227 :
- Ligne n°228 : An especially unsavory example of unpatriotic behavior is when American
- Ligne n°229 : workers, before being laid off, have been required to train their own
- Ligne n°230 : replacement outsourced foreign workers.
- Ligne n°231 :
- Ligne n°232 : Trust, loyalty, sacrifice, duty, honor, and respect are traits
- Ligne n°233 : associated with the patriotism of the American people. For most large
- Ligne n°234 : U.S. corporations, these expected behaviors are dissolved in the
- Ligne n°235 : frenzied drive for profits and executive pay at the expense of their
- Ligne n°236 : native country.
- Ligne n°237 :
- Ligne n°238 : The Fourth of July should be a day of contemplation about corporate
- Ligne n°239 : resistance to normal standards of patriotism, in as much as
- Ligne n°240 : corporations demand the fruits and benefits of their "country of birth"
- Ligne n°241 : while escaping responsibilities of their citizenship. Some cynical
- Ligne n°242 : corporate executives are lately abandoning their domicile in America
- Ligne n°243 : and reincorporating in tax haven countries that do their bidding. As
