- Ligne n°33 :
- Ligne n°34 : How patriotic are Americans? The answer is simple and straightforward.
- Ligne n°35 : Americans love their country and aren’t afraid to say so. Americans
- Ligne n°36 : would rather live in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, and they
- Ligne n°37 : still believe the fundamental structure of our democratic system is
- Ligne n°38 : sound. But American patriotism is not of the knee-jerk or blind
- Ligne n°39 : variety. They are vocal in their criticisms, and right now, are deeply
- Ligne n°40 : dissatisfied and frustrated with the way things are going in the
- Ligne n°41 : country.
- Ligne n°42 :
- Ligne n°43 : Patriotic attitudes are generally very stable. In a question Gallup
- Ligne n°44 : asked in January 2001, 87% said they were “extremely” or “very” proud
- Ligne n°45 : to be American. When Pew repeated the identical question last year, 86%
- Ligne n°46 : gave that response. In 2001 and 2009, only 1% said they were “not at
- Ligne n°47 : all proud.” The 9/11 tragedy produced more overt displays of patriotism
- Ligne n°48 : and heightened sentiment, but responses soon returned to the norm.
- Ligne n°49 :
- Ligne n°50 : When the Pew Research Center asked people last year to agree or
- Ligne n°51 : disagree with the statement “I am very patriotic,” 54% “completely”
- Ligne n°52 : agreed with it and another 34% did so “moderately,” for 88% overall
- Ligne n°53 : agreement In 1987, when Pew asked this question for the first time, 89%
- Ligne n°54 : agreed. Pew notes that there has been little variation in responses in
- Ligne n°55 : more than a dozen iterations of the question.
- Ligne n°56 :
- Ligne n°57 : There are some interesting differences among subgroups the population.
- Ligne n°58 : Young people are less likely than older ones to express strong
- Ligne n°59 : patriotic sentiment. Patriotism, in other words, may come with age.
- Ligne n°60 : Black Americans’ attitudes have become more positive about many aspects
- Ligne n°61 : of society since Barack Obama became president, but there has been
- Ligne n°62 : little change in the willingness of blacks to express strong
- Ligne n°63 : patriotism. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say they are
- Ligne n°64 : very patriotic.
- Ligne n°65 :
- Ligne n°66 : Pollsters also ask people about the patriotism of their countrymen. In
- Ligne n°67 : a Pew question from 2010, one-third said they were more patriotic than
- Ligne n°68 : their fellow citizens, but a clear majority, 59%, said they were about
- Ligne n°69 : as patriotic. Only 6% considered themselves less so.
- Ligne n°70 :
- Ligne n°71 : Americans’ patriotism is steadfast in part because they believe they
- Ligne n°72 : have the best system of government in the world. In 2007, during the
- Ligne n°73 : divisive Iraq war, a pollster asked people about the statement,
- Ligne n°74 : “Whatever its faults, the United States still has the best system of
- Ligne n°75 : government in the world.” Eighty-one percent agreed. That response is
- Ligne n°76 : very similar to the one ABC got when it first asked this question in
- Ligne n°77 : 1992 (85%).
- Ligne n°78 :
- Ligne n°79 : Americans are very critical today of the performance of many of our
- Ligne n°80 : central institutions. Two new polls this week show that around
- Ligne n°81 : two-thirds of Americans are dissatisfied with the way things are going
- Ligne n°82 : in the country today, and many other surveys reveal deep anxiety. But
- Ligne n°83 : the fundamental structure seems sound to most people.
- Ligne n°84 :
- Ligne n°85 : In his travels in the United States in the 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville
- Ligne n°86 : described America as exceptional, or qualitatively different; the
- Ligne n°87 : surveys bear this out. In World Values Surveys, Americans are more
- Ligne n°88 : likely than people in most other countries to say that they are very
- Ligne n°89 : patriotic, and more people in the U.S. than elsewhere say they prefer
- Ligne n°90 : to live in their home country.
- Ligne n°91 :
- Ligne n°92 : In 1948 Gallup asked people whether they would live in another country
- Ligne n°93 : if they were free to do so, and only 3% said they would. In a 2009 Fox
- Ligne n°94 : News/Opinion Dynamics question, 7% said another country would be a
- Ligne n°95 : better place to live than the U.S. Ninety percent said the U.S. was the
- Ligne n°96 : best place to live. Not a bad run.
- Ligne n°97 :
- Ligne n°98 : A 1983 question from The New York Times that hasn’t been repeated since
- Ligne n°99 : asked people whether you actually have to do something to be patriotic
- Ligne n°100 : or whether it is enough to love one’s country. One-third said a person
- Ligne n°101 : had to do something, but two-thirds said it was enough to love one’s
- Ligne n°102 : country. When asked what kind of acts would be demonstrations of
- Ligne n°103 : patriotism, large majorities answered voting, joining in the singing of
- Ligne n°104 : The Star Spangled Banner and serving in the military or on a jury.
- Ligne n°105 :
- Ligne n°106 : After 9/11 around 80% of Americans told pollsters that they flew the
- Ligne n°107 : flag. A few years later around 60% gave that response. A shock like
- Ligne n°108 : 9/11 can produce more intense patriotism, but the ordinary everyday
- Ligne n°109 : variety of American patriotism appears very durable indeed.
