- Ligne n°256 : The Stone
- Ligne n°257 :
- Ligne n°258 : The Stone is a forum for contemporary philosophers and other thinkers
- Ligne n°259 : on issues both timely and timeless.
- Ligne n°260 : To my mind, the Fourth of July has a lot going for it compared with
- Ligne n°261 : other holidays: great food without a lot of work, warm weather, no
- Ligne n°262 : presents, and fireworks. And, in our house, at least, there’s the
- Ligne n°263 : special moment when we read out loud the Declaration of Independence
- Ligne n°264 : and follow with a toast (American sparkling wine, of course), “To the
- Ligne n°265 : United States of America!” And I have to force back tears of pride at
- Ligne n°266 : being an American.
- Ligne n°267 :
- Ligne n°268 : Patriotism need not conflict with a universal moral outlook.
- Ligne n°269 :
- Ligne n°270 : This is my own distinctive experience of what we call “patriotism,” and
- Ligne n°271 : I suspect that many Americans experience something similar, and
- Ligne n°272 : acknowledge it in their own ways. Amid the frequent confusion,
- Ligne n°273 : frustration and anger of our political disagreements, patriotism — a
- Ligne n°274 : deep-seated love of our country — remains something that has the
- Ligne n°275 : potential to bring us together, particularly at times of national
- Ligne n°276 : crisis or triumph.
- Ligne n°277 :
- Ligne n°278 : But within my own particular intellectual tribe of philosophers,
- Ligne n°279 : patriotism is often regarded as a “problem,” an emotion that many find
- Ligne n°280 : hard to defend as morally appropriate. Of course, many Americans are
- Ligne n°281 : uneasy with, even repelled by, certain expressions of patriotism —
- Ligne n°282 : perhaps the obligatory flag-pins of politicians, the inanity of
- Ligne n°283 : “freedom fries,” the suggestion in the revised Pledge of Allegiance
- Ligne n°284 : that atheists aren’t patriotic, or even readings of the Declaration of
- Ligne n°285 : Independence. But the philosophical problem of patriotism is not about
- Ligne n°286 : whether or not certain expressions of patriotism are appropriate; it is
- Ligne n°287 : about the moral defensibility of the attitude as such. (For a good
- Ligne n°288 : survey of the philosophical issues see Igor Primoriz’s Stanford
- Ligne n°289 : Encyclopedia article.)
- Ligne n°290 :
- Ligne n°291 : At the beginning of Plato’s “Republic,” Socrates asks what justice
- Ligne n°292 : (doing the morally right thing) is, and Polemarchus replies that it’s
- Ligne n°293 : helping your friends and harming your enemies. That was the answer
- Ligne n°294 : among the ancient Greeks as well as many other traditional societies.
- Ligne n°295 : Moral behavior was the way you treated those in your “in-group,” as
- Ligne n°296 : opposed to outsiders.
- Ligne n°297 :
- Ligne n°298 : Socrates questioned this ethical exclusivism, thus beginning a
- Ligne n°299 : centuries-long argument that, by modern times, led most major moral
- Ligne n°300 : philosophers (for example, Mill and Kant) to conclude that morality
- Ligne n°301 : required an impartial, universal viewpoint that treated all human
- Ligne n°302 : beings as equals. In other words, the “in-group” for morality is not
- Ligne n°303 : any particular social group (family, city, nation) but humankind as a
- Ligne n°304 : whole. This universal moral viewpoint seems to reject patriotism for
- Ligne n°305 : “cosmopolitanism” —the view perhaps first formulated by Diogenes, who,
- Ligne n°306 : when asked where he came from, replied that he was a citizen of the
- Ligne n°307 : world.
- Ligne n°308 :
- Ligne n°309 : Certainly, patriotism can take an explicitly amoral form: “My country,
- Ligne n°310 : right or wrong.” But even strong traditional patriots can accept moral
- Ligne n°311 : limits on the means we use to advance the cause of our country. They
- Ligne n°312 : may agree, for example, that it’s wrong to threaten Canada with nuclear
- Ligne n°313 : annihilation to obtain a more favorable trade agreement.
- Ligne n°314 :
- Ligne n°315 : But the moral problem for patriotism arises at a deeper level. Suppose
- Ligne n°316 : the question is not about blatantly immoral means but simply about
- Ligne n°317 : whether our country should flourish at the expense of another? Suppose,
- Ligne n°318 : for example, that at some point Saudi Arabia, now allied with China,
- Ligne n°319 : threatened to curtail our access to its oil, thereby significantly
- Ligne n°320 : reducing our productivity and tipping the balance of world economic
- Ligne n°321 : power to China. Imagine an American president who declined to oppose
- Ligne n°322 : this action because he had concluded that, from a disinterested moral
- Ligne n°323 : viewpoint, it was better for mankind as a whole. Even if we admired
- Ligne n°324 : such a response, it’s hard to think that it would express patriotic
- Ligne n°325 : regard for the United States.
- Ligne n°326 :
- Ligne n°327 : Should we therefore conclude that patriotism is ultimately at odds with
- Ligne n°328 : a moral viewpoint? There remains the option of denying that morality
- Ligne n°329 : has the universal, all-inclusive nature modern philosophers think it
- Ligne n°330 : has. Alasdair MacIntyre, for example, argues that morality is rooted in
- Ligne n°331 : the life of a specific real community — a village, a city, a nation,
- Ligne n°332 : with its idiosyncratic customs and history — and that, therefore,
- Ligne n°333 : adherence to morality requires loyalty to such a community. Patriotism,
- Ligne n°334 : on this view, is essential for living a morally good life. MacIntyre’s
- Ligne n°335 : argument (in his Lindley Lecture, “Is Patriotism a Virtue?”) has
- Ligne n°336 : provided the most powerful contemporary defense of a full-blooded
- Ligne n°337 : patriotism.
- Ligne n°338 :
- Ligne n°339 : It may seem, then, that we must either accept modern universalist
- Ligne n°340 : ethics and reject patriotism as a basic moral virtue or accept
- Ligne n°341 : patriotism along with MacIntyre’s traditional localist morality. But
- Ligne n°342 : perhaps, at least in the American context, there is a way of avoiding
- Ligne n°343 : the dilemma.
- Ligne n°344 :
- Ligne n°345 : For what is the animating ideal of American patriotism if not the
- Ligne n°346 : freedom of all persons, not just its own citizens? This is apparent in
- Ligne n°347 : our Declaration, which bases its case for independence on the principle
- Ligne n°348 : that governments exist to “secure the rights” of “life, liberty and the
- Ligne n°349 : pursuit of happiness” to which all persons are equally entitled. This
- Ligne n°350 : principle is the avowed purpose of all our actions as a nation, and we
- Ligne n°351 : may read our history as the story of our successes and failures in
- Ligne n°352 : carrying out this principle. America, then, is the paradox of a local
- Ligne n°353 : historical project that aims at universal liberation. Through this
- Ligne n°354 : project, we have a way of combining traditional patriotism with
- Ligne n°355 : universal morality.

- Ligne n°362 :
- Ligne n°363 : This project has had many failures, most often when we forget that the
- Ligne n°364 : freedom of a nation must always grow from its own historical roots. We
- Ligne n°365 : cannot simply wage a war that rips up those roots and then transplant
- Ligne n°366 : shoots from our own stock (American-style capitalism, political
- Ligne n°367 : parties, our popular culture). We have also often forgotten that the
- Ligne n°368 : liberation of our own citizens is by no means complete. But none of
- Ligne n°369 : this alters the fact that our governments have often worked and our
- Ligne n°370 : soldiers died not just for our own freedom but for the freedom of all
- Ligne n°371 : nations.
- Ligne n°372 :
- Ligne n°373 : We are a MacIntyrean community that is still trying to live out a
- Ligne n°374 : modern morality that seeks the freedom of everyone. I love America
- Ligne n°375 : because I still believe that this sublime project is possible.
