- Ligne n°92 :
- Ligne n°93 : Hundreds of Jefferson County high school students walked out of their
- Ligne n°94 : classes this week in response to a proposal submitted by members of the
- Ligne n°95 : Jefferson County school board seeking to revamp the county's US history
- Ligne n°96 : curriculum.
- Ligne n°97 :
- Ligne n°98 : Reports from local media confirmed that hundreds of students from
- Ligne n°99 : Dakota Ridge, Chatfield, Arvada West, Pomona, Ralston Valley,
- Ligne n°100 : Evergreen, Wheat Ridge, and Golden high schools participated in the
- Ligne n°101 : walkouts and demonstrations which included the blocking of a main
- Ligne n°102 : intersection in suburban Denver on Wednesday morning.
- Ligne n°103 :
- Ligne n°104 : The proposal, submitted by a three-member majority of the school board
- Ligne n°105 : calling itself the "Board Committee for Curriculum Review," stated:
- Ligne n°106 :
- Ligne n°107 : "Theories should be distinguished from fact. Materials should promote
- Ligne n°108 : citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise
- Ligne n°109 : system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights.
- Ligne n°110 : Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife
- Ligne n°111 : or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present
- Ligne n°112 : positive aspects of the United States and its heritage. Content
- Ligne n°113 : pertaining to political and social movements in history should present
- Ligne n°114 : balanced and factual treatment of the positions."
- Ligne n°115 :
- Ligne n°116 : The walkouts came on the heels of a "sick-out" involving some 50
- Ligne n°117 : teachers on Friday, which was planned in response to the US history
- Ligne n°118 : curriculum proposal and to new teacher evaluation measures.
- Ligne n°119 :
- Ligne n°120 : A statement issued Monday by Conifer High School teachers participating
- Ligne n°121 : in the sick-out denounced "the Board's insistence on censoring the
- Ligne n°122 : college preparatory AP US History curriculum," saying it would "require
- Ligne n°123 : teachers to completely ignore certain aspects of American history." The
- Ligne n°124 : statement further condemned the imposition of "an arbitrary,
- Ligne n°125 : nontransparent evaluation system that vests absolute authority in
- Ligne n°126 : administrators."
- Ligne n°127 :
- Ligne n°128 : Students organized their own protests for the following week via
- Ligne n°129 : Facebook after learning of the teacher sick-out. The students were
- Ligne n°130 : strongly warned against participating in the demonstrations by school
- Ligne n°131 : administrators but proceeded to walk out anyway, local parents said.
- Ligne n°132 :
- Ligne n°133 : Jefferson County, the second largest school district in Colorado, is
- Ligne n°134 : among several districts that have become focal points for controversy
- Ligne n°135 : surrounding efforts to revise the AP US History curriculum (APUSH)

- Ligne n°137 :
- Ligne n°138 : Opponents of the revised history curriculum, described by Jefferson

- Ligne n°140 : gender, class, ethnicity, grievance and American-bashing," have sought
- Ligne n°141 : to alter local education statutes to favor a more "conservative"
- Ligne n°142 : approach to US history.
- Ligne n°143 :
- Ligne n°144 : Such efforts have already met with some success in Texas, where
- Ligne n°145 : operating rules drawn up by the State Board of Education (SBOE) in 2013
- Ligne n°146 : contain language almost identical to that of the Jefferson County
- Ligne n°147 : proposal: "The materials should not include selections or works that
- Ligne n°148 : encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife, or disregard of the
- Ligne n°149 : law. Violence, if it appears, should be treated in the context of its
- Ligne n°150 : cause and consequence. It should not appear for reasons of unwholesome
- Ligne n°151 : excitement or sensationalism."
- Ligne n°152 :
- Ligne n°153 : The Texas SBOE rules state openly that historical curricula should be
- Ligne n°154 : designed to promote "an economic system characterized by private or
- Ligne n°155 : corporate ownership of capital goods; investments that are determined
- Ligne n°156 : by private decision rather than by state control; and prices,
- Ligne n°157 : production, and the distribution of goods that are determined in a free
- Ligne n°158 : market."
- Ligne n°159 :
- Ligne n°160 : No serious history of the United States could be written without giving
- Ligne n°161 : extensive treatment of “civil disorder, social strife or disregard of
- Ligne n°162 : law,” including such epochal advances as the American Revolution, the
- Ligne n°163 : Civil War, the struggles of the labor movement over a century, and the
- Ligne n°164 : civil rights movement. Presumably the defenders of private ownership
- Ligne n°165 : are outraged by positive treatment of the greatest state attack on
- Ligne n°166 : “private” property in world history up to that point, Lincoln’s
- Ligne n°167 : Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves throughout the
- Ligne n°168 : Confederacy, without compensation to the slave-owners.
- Ligne n°169 :
- Ligne n°170 : While media coverage presents the issue as a struggle between
- Ligne n°171 : "conservatives" and "liberals," in reality the assault on historical
- Ligne n°172 : knowledge by the ultra-right is bound up with the broader education
- Ligne n°173 : "reform" agenda being implemented nationwide by the Obama
- Ligne n°174 : administration, which has continued and deepened the reactionary
- Ligne n°175 : education policies of the George W. Bush administration.

- Ligne n°179 : pro-corporate elements in American society, advancing a program of
- Ligne n°180 : merit pay, teacher evaluations based on standardized testing, and

- Ligne n°182 :
- Ligne n°183 : In a commentary published in the Colorado Observer commending the newly
- Ligne n°184 : elected Jefferson County school board, Dustin Zvonek of the ultra-right
- Ligne n°185 : Americans for Prosperity, part of the Koch brothers lobbying empire,
- Ligne n°186 : called for "common sense reforms" such as "funding fairness for charter
- Ligne n°187 : schools" and "a merit pay system which links better documented
- Ligne n°188 : performance to higher pay for teachers." Zvonek's recommendations have
- Ligne n°189 : the full support of the Democratic Party leadership and the Obama
- Ligne n°190 : administration, not just the Republican right.
- Ligne n°191 :
- Ligne n°192 : No struggle against the destruction of public education and the

- Ligne n°195 : establishment. This has to be the starting point for the Jefferson
- Ligne n°196 : County students and all who support their efforts.
- Ligne n°197 :
- Ligne n°198 : The Jefferson County student protests appear set to continue, in one
