The Hippie

HI!  I guess if you’re clicking around these parts you’re wondering who I am…

IMG_1637

To keep things simple:

I’m a wife, mother, nurse, and lover of food.

k&e

When I first started this blog back in 2008, I was dabbling in veganism as a way to sort out my GI issues.  As you’d expect, I’ve learned and changed a lot over the years and so has my diet.  Since then I’ve been vegetarian, pescatarian, wheat free, and dairy free, but my son’s (extensive) allergies are now what run the show in our house!

I prefer not to be labeled by my food choices, but I do try to follow a LOW FODMAP diet which you can read more about here (I have a long GI history) while still maintaining an allergy friendly kitchen (no peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, soy, dairy, or gluten for my little guy).  Fortunately, I’m passionate about cooking.  The learning curve has been extreme, so I’m happy to share it here on the blog in the hopes of helping other parents in my situation.

mountain1

I grew up being incredibly active and exercise remains a big part of my life.  I enjoy all things fitness: running, cycling, hiking, tennis, golf, anything and everything.  I do it for health reasons, but even more, it makes me feel good.

market

I try to be as green as possible (hence the “hippie”) thanks to my upbringing.  My parents are the ultimate hippies, providing inspiration on how to live in a healthy way, respecting yourself, respecting others, and respecting the planet.   I have big shoes to fill, so I am continually working to reduce my carbon footprint.

I am a west coaster trapped in the east as well. Oh, the weather. I’ve been in CT for 2.5 yrs now and I’m still not use to it. I long for the Cali sun!!

  27. Charlie

Hi, Elise! I adore your blog! I’m fairly new to it but there’s plenty to keep a person glued to the monitor in the spirit of catch up so thank you for that. 😀

I came across your place here when I was doing some all natural detox research around the time I did the GOOP 7 Day Plan about a month ago. Been following you on Twitter, as well! I see ya don’t have a Facebook but if you ever open one, plz let us know. Would love to add ya! 😀

I’m in the beta stages of planning my own foodie blog with a general focus on health & fitness woven into that, (not to mention drizzles of the pop-culture & fashion I’m obsessed with!). Yours is SO inspiring! I’m a Private Chef, artist, photographer & soon-to-be first time novelist from Texas and just wanted to say “Nice to meet ya!”

I documented my whole GOOP thing on Facebook and am currently gearing to do the same with something I’ve been wanting to try for awhile now – a Raw Vegan diet. Have you ever gone down that road? I’m thinking of giving it a week’s go and see how it is. Fruits & Veggies and I are BFF as it is so I don’t feel there will be any culinary shock to be had. I was just wondering if you had any insight into this sort of thing?

Regardless, ADORE your blog! Read it religiously. Your photos and recipes are gr8 and you just seem like a bunch of powdered sunshine; perfect for adding to smoothies! :p

Nice to meet ya again, Elise. Keep up the good work!

    ~Charlie

  28. Gracie

Girl, I’m just loving your blog. So glad I came across it. I’ll definitely be following =)

  29. elise

Charlie – what a kind comment! It’s so nice to hear from readers, especially when the feedback is so wonderful! Please let me know once your blog is u[ and running because it sounds like it’s right up my ally 🙂 I’ve never gone full raw, but I have gone for periods of time in which I increased the raw foods in my diet significantly…I love fruits and veggies too, so it wasn’t too hard for me. It’s harder in winter when I want warm dishes though…I wish you the best of luck. And again, thanks for dropping by to say hi!!

  30. elise

hi gracie!! glad you stopped by and enjoy the blog 🙂

I have a bachelor’s in Comm, but am considering nursing, so I wanted to ask, since it sounds like you might have been in the position as me. What made you decide on nursing too? Thanks!

Hi Elise! I just wanted you to know that you really inspired me to start my own blog and really be accountable for what I’m putting into my body.
The changes I’m trying to make are not a “diet” it’s a lifestyle makeover that I want to dictate the rest of my life! I really found a starting spot by reading your blog, so I just wanted you to know that. 🙂

  108. Deanna

Love your page! I’m a freshman living in a dorm room, which means: tiny refrigerator (that I share) and a utility room with a stove and oven that is shared with 30 other girls. Getting adjusted was kinda stressful since I’ve always had a healthy kitchen to walk into for all of my life. However, I’ve got a big container under my bed full of quinoa, flax, chia, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, sunflower butter, steel cut oats (gf), lentils, tahini, amaranth, beans, cacao nibs, shredded coconut, coconut oil, vega protein, and some sardines, tuna and salmon. My fridge is re-filled every weekend with just enough swiss chard, kale, spinach, humus, mushrooms, onion, carrots, avocado, celery, sigi yogurt, egg, aloe vera, black bean burgers (made in advance) and what ever fruit was lookin’ yummy at the supermarket. Needless to say, my room mate probably hates me because I’m a refrigerator hog and all my food is foreign to her. ANYWAYS, I lovelovelove your page because you eat most all of the things I do. I have tried/am trying some of your recipes this week, so keep em’ comin! Btw could you add some more without gluten, cane sugar and soy ? I’m allergic 🙁 kinda sucks because I feel like soy is a staple in most vegan lifestyles… take care!

  109. Dana

Hi! Such a cute blog and a great story. Thanks for sharing 🙂 I just randomly found you after typing in these keywords into google: black bean, quinoa, banana. A picture of your delicious looking brownies showed up, and there you were! Just stopping by to say hello and I’ll keep browsing…

Hey there! Just wanted to leave a comment. I found your blog about a week ago (I don’t even remember how I got here in the first place. I love randomly ending up in the nooks and crannies of the interwebs :-)) and I haven’t been able to stop reading all of your posts since!
I’ve been a vegetarian for years and recently started working towards a (more) vegan diet. Your tips have been very helpful. Although some products are really hard to come by here in the Netherlands. Nutritional yeast? Sounds great, I haven’t seen it here. Even vegan cheese and vegan sour cream are (almost) impossible to get. Anyway, keep up the blog, it’s a great inspiration. Greetings from around the globe!

hi Annewil! glad you found me, thanks for the kind feedback 🙂

  128. Shane

    Elise,

I emailed you a couple of weeks ago but you never responded. I h e tried a couple of your meals and they are great.

  129. Elise (Post author)

hi shane. thanks for reading and im glad you liked the recipes. cheers!

  130. Taylor

    Hey girl!
My name is Taylor, I’m a 19 year old college student(on a nursing track) and I LOVE your blog. I am in a similar situation digestively haha, and I am always looking at new ways to ease my food struggles. I love food and I love being active however the upsets tend to get in the way of this. I was recently introduced to the low/no FODMAPS diet and therefore I googled it and wound up here. There is so much useful information on your site, I am almost overwhelmed, but excited to explore and overall feel better.
    Thanks,
    Taylor
    P.s. Keep writing forever please?

  131. Hannah

    Hey Elise!

I am so excited to have come across your wonderful website and blog. It’s so nice to be able to read and learn more about what we can do about GI problems and food struggles. I am in the same boat as many of the people above with IBS – I can’t wait to try your recipes!

PS: did you have a facebook page I can follow?

    Hannah x

  132. Elise (Post author)

hi taylor! thanks for commenting. im so glad youre finding my site useful. the fodmaps diet definitely made me feel better so i hope you keep finding the same…ill try and continue to offer helpful info 🙂

  133. Elise (Post author)

hi hannah – no facebook page 🙁 but you can subscribe (theres a link in the side bar for rss feed subscriptions).
    but thanks for stopping by

  134. Annika

Hey Elise, I’ve recently come across your blog and I love it!!! I’m actually a high school student thinking of applying to UCLA I have a few questions for you. Did you like the atmosphere? Did you receive any sort of scholarship? Would you recommend going there? Is it hard to adapt? Haha kinda silly, but just let me know!!

  135. Elise (Post author)

    hi annika,
i LOVED ucla. i thought it was a fun campus with a ton going on…but i will say its a HUGE campus and there are a ton of people. it helps to make it smaller by joining clubs, sororities, volunteer groups, etc. (which there are a trillion of btw). i had the time of my life in college and met friends that i will have forever. oh, and my husband 😉
i didnt get a scholarship but kyle did. for undergrad and for mba school (thats where he is now).
to answer your other question, i came from a very small town but didnt have any trouble adapting. im social by nature, so i thought it was great to have such an enormous amount of opportunities at my fingertips. theres really so much to see and do at ucla theres no way you could ever NOT find your niche. if you are even the tiniest bit outgoing you will thrive. of course you can thrive as a shy person too. they student body is the most eclectic mix of people. so many talented, unique, diverse, creative, smart students.
    hope that helps!

  136. k

Nice lookin fam, but no offense i think u chose the wrong blog title bc ur Not a hippie just bc u eat healthy food. Youre as valley girl as it gets

  137. George

No offense, k, but I really don’t think in 2012 anyone gets to sit in judgment on who is and isn’t a hippie–at least not anyone younger than about 55. Healthy food, organic food, local food, increased vegetarianism and veganism are all lasting and meaningful positive contributions of the hippie movement. There are many others.

  138. K

yeah sure it did make a big impact on culture but just because you’re impacted by it does not make you an Embodiment of such!!! Besides it is just one element of the whole very complex movement. Lets just stop bickering here, anyone with even a half functioning brain would know I’m completely right! I’m going to say what I think so if you have any problem with that at least have a valid objection. But you don’t, because there aren’t any.
All Im saying is she would do well to consider other names

  139. Annika

That helps a TON!!! Thank you so much for your advice!! I’m really excited about touring the campus and its awesome to get good feedback! Thanks again!!

  140. George

K: It’s hard to go anywhere online these days without running into an intolerant name-caller like you, who has nothing whatsoever to add to the conversation except an effort to tear down others.

So now I lack a “half functioning brain” (never mind my Phi Beta Kappa at a very highly regarded college) and have no “valid objection” to your rude presumptive comment–comments that only serve to negate and belittle the constructive efforts this young lady has put into her site? You don’t state why you feel qualified to sit in judgment on who is and isn’t a hippie or why that term is even applicable in 2012 except in a historical sense–questions raised by implication in my comment that I’ll now expressly challenge you with.

Further, you say there simply aren’t any valid objections to your rudeness to her about the name of her site. None? This is what passes for a rational discussion on the web these days–just call someone stupid and wrong and expect them to go away. Just say “I’m right, you’re wrong. Why? Because I am.” Not me, I don’t give anyone the last word when they act like that. No way.

She didn’t say she was an “embodiment” of a hippie. You did. And you jumped to the conclusion that she was “as valley girl as it gets.” Based on what? Her clothes? Her Dad’s necktie? Her job? Her husband’s haircut? Her taste in athletics and exercise? Who are you? Are you a “hippie”? In what sense? If so, shouldn’t you have learned not to stereotype people like that? Maybe you need to reread why she chose the name: “I try to be as green as possible (hence the “hippie”). I recycle, use energy efficient appliances, buy products that are all earth friendly, but know there is ALWAYS room for improvement. I was raised by the best parents. They provided (and still provide) inspiration on how to live in a healthy way, respecting yourself, respecting others, and respecting the planet. … They are the ultimate hippies…they compost all their trash in the backyard and use it as fertilizer …. I have big shoes to fill, so I am continually working to reduce my carbon footprint.”

She never said that in all aspects of her life she was a hippie. Her blog name simply gives credit where credit is due to the hippies for doing so much to change the US food, agricultural, and environmental ethos. And, other than rock music and destructive drug culture (and the destructive war on drugs), that may be the most lasting legacy of the hippie movement.

  141. Anna @ The Guiltless Life

I’m so glad I found your blog – your food prep posts in particular are incredibly healthy, and your eating style is very similar to mine (I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 5 years now, and the only dairy I do consume is Greek yogurt or eggs and occasionally cheese/milk if I’m at someone’s house).

I’m especially chuffed because your dad is wearing a Cayman Islands shirt in one of those photos (I think he is anyway – I can’t see the first letter but can’t think of any other places ending in ayman!) and that’s where I’m from :). Always so happy to see my home country represented – thank your dad for spreading the word about us!

I can’t wait to read more, thanks for doing what you do!

  142. K

you basically just repeated what you just said, except you said, “I have a degree”. I’m one year away from getting a degree too. But even if I had 5 or 10 degrees that has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation.
The blog name refers to HER, not as tribute to other hippies. Otherwise it would say something like, *For* Hungry Hungry Hippies. For all of this impressive schooling you claim to have, it seems to have done zero improvement for your basic level reading skills.
The fact that you think I am being mean to her when I am just making an observation and a critique for improvement, points to the fact that you feel very defensive about this because you know you have No arguments against what I said, and being as you took offense at me for repeating my rightness, which I am, and then proceeded to do the same except in a lengthier manner by elaborating on your previous moot points, makes your second comment negatable. Because of this, you can just go ahead and read my other comment, again and again until it gets through your insolent head.

And no-I did not say I’m not being rude to YOU. I am, because that’s the treatment you gave me in your own comment. Maybe you ought to go back to school again to learn how to not debate in the way you actually are falsely criticizing someone else for.

  143. Elise (Post author)

    Hi Guys,

I appreciate the passionate discussion going on here, but d you think you could continue it elsewhere. My “about me” page is not the appropriate forum for an argument that I’m not even participating in.

    Thanks
    Elise

hi anna! glad you found me too. i vacationed on grand cayman island and loved it 🙂

Hello to the lovely Elise! I just wanted to let you know that my marketing group and I had used your Quinoa-Granola recipe had a major part in our repositioning act on the product “Go Go Quinoa”. To make a long story short, we actually won 1st place overall for best marketing concept (MKTG 2150 – Mount Royal University) and got koodoos for how effin’ tasty your recipe was!! I’m neither vegan or gluten-sensitive but the Quinoa-Granola was very delicious. Perfect for an after work-out snack! P.S. do you have a twitter account? I’d like to get connected!

    Hi there!

I read your blog often now since I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago. Anyway, I am currently in an accelerated second degree nursing program and found this online: http://whatshouldwecallnursingschool.tumblr.com/

I was laughing so hard, especially on pages 2 and 3. Thought you might appreciate it having gone through nursing school yourself!

    All the best!

  153. Elise (Post author)

hahaha…i love this! thanks for passing it along to me. i saw the #whatshouldwecallme one before, but the nursing school twist is hilarious. im loving looking through them 🙂

We have so much in common: I’m also from NorCal (San Jose), Barcelona is one of my most favorite places on Earth (I’ve been there 6 times), and I’m a huge fitness fanatic (was a personal trainer for 8 years). Elise,
I came across your site while looking for hippie-ish places to promote my hippy-era novel “The Misadventures of Mama Kitchen” (Available on Amazon – there’s the plug). But I can’t leave without saying that I think you are gorgeous (hope hubby doesn’t mind my saying that) and your site is beautiful as well. I have been living overseas in Greece for many years and have just moved back to the States. I’m still living in a hotel but when my sons and I find a house I am going to return to your site and try some of your yummy-looking recipes.

  159. Elise (Post author)

hi john! you are so sweet. im sure kyle wont mind 😉 greece sounds amazing – santorini is definitely on my travel hit list. welcome back to the states!

  160. Jessica Painter

    Hey!
Just wanted to say I love your blog and all of your recipes! I live in Northern California (Chico), and theres only a few resteraunts I can eat at, being vegan, and actually enjoy my meal! Youd think there would be more around here haha.
I’m always cooking at home and can’t wait to try out some of these foods! Thanks girl!

  161. Elise (Post author)

hi jessica! glad you found me. my husband is a chico native too. they have a pretty awesome co-op. i think ive pretty much stuck to that, pita pit, pluto’s and cafe coda.

  162. Terra

I love this blog! Thank you so much! I am veganish as well with the occasional fish or egg. I struggle with the time and energy for fitness since I am a new grad nurse working full time and looking for a new grad position here in California is a full time job in itself! (I have 7 years experience as a tech in the ER and am still struggling!)

I digress… my question is what do you do to motivate yourself when you really really really dont want to go running?

  163. Elise (Post author)

hi terra! thanks for stopping by and saying hi.

finding the balance with our crazy work hours and eating well is tricky. hope you can get some good tips here 🙂

  164. Elise (Post author)

as for the running motivation…ugh…sometimes its not meant to be and ill do something else instead – like cycle. but other times ill go out with some good music and tell myself it will just be a walk and sometimes i get inspired after a few blocks and start to jog too…good mixes with upbeat songs are key.
i used to force it way more, but now im less inclined to do so.
have you tried hiking or group classes at a gym or yoga? i find diversity in my routine makes running less dull.

  165. Dreef

Hi! Love your site– not sure if you’ve discovered this on your own yet.. but here is the ingredient list link for the Arbonne Essentials Vanilla Protein Shake. http://www.arbonnemarketing.com/PK/dl/pk/2070_au_eng.pdf

  173. Erika

Thank you for sharing your experiences and remedies/diet tips. I suspect that I have a severe fructose intolerance and or malabsorption… can you tell me about your symptoms? I need to know from someone who has been diagnosed so I can figure out how to treat whatever is going on with me. I am desperate for help, as I do not have health insurance, and I feel miserable and COMPLETELY socially avoidant most of the time. The symptoms that interfere with my daily living the most are: constant fatigue (no matter how much sleep I get), the inability to lose weight, feeling sluggish and heavy, gassy after eating fructose, bloating/constipation, moodiness (feeling incapable of experiencing happiness — and it’s mostly because I feel so uncomfortable physically), also, it seems the weight I’ve gained, and am incapable of losing, is *water weight* (which of course is heavier than fat so it will make one feel VERY heavy). It has nearly reached a crippling point. I no longer have the will to get out of bed and I’m usually very motivated. I’m not looking for you to diagnose me, I just want to know if these symptoms are common. I’m having a hard time finding a comprehensive and detailed list of the symptoms online. You reply would be much appreciated. Thank you for reading. I’m glad you have been able to heal yourself. I yearn for the same for myself.

  174. Erika

Correction: *Your* reply would be much appreciated.

  175. Elise (Post author)

hi erika, ive written in more detail about this on my fodmaps site:
    http://www.fodmapsdiet.com
please remember that every person is an individual and my symptoms and dietary solutions are unique to me, so please seek out a medical professional rather than comparing yourself to others.

I am a fellow Californian born and raised in SF…however, I have been living in Grand Rapids, MI….I have colitis and am trying to be pro active about it! So it’s a gluten free, lactose free food. I need to figure out my pantry (big change) so that I can eat! I like your website, I also am a hippie!!!! ☮
So, any advise would be wonderful!
    Thank you

  177. Elise (Post author)

hope you find the site helpful laurie!

  178. Grace

    +1, George.

  179. Jessica

    Hi Elise!

I’m trying to use your cheesecake recipe but to make pumpkin cheesecake layer bars – so excited =X – I wonder if you would have any idea how to change the baking times/temps if i were using like a …caserole-dish-shaped pan – metal pan. So the metal is a bit heavier than a pie tin. If it helps i went with this pie filling http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipe/vegan-pumpkin-pie/ definitely keeping your crust though =] If you have NO IDEA well then thanks for the recipe anywho and at least we’re on the SAME page!! =]

    Thanks!
    Jessica

  180. Elise (Post author)

hi jessica! first off that sounds like an awesome recipe tweak. as far as the baking time goes, im not really sure (sorry!). are you cooking one layer and then the other? i wish i could be more helpful but i dont really know :/ good luck!?!

  181. Jessica

Haha. It’s ok… I’m thinking right now that i might just like half-bake the pumpkin filling which takes longer to cook, then spread it into the pan with the crust (already in it!! so yummy!!) then add the cheesecake layer and let all 3 finish baking together. I’ll let you know how it goes! =]

  182. Ruben

Hello from Spain! (actually, quite near to Barcelona)

I found your blog looking for information about healthier types of food. The thing is, right now I am eating like a viking, and I am afraid that it’s not the best thing I can do to my body (at least vikings were all day fighting, pillaging, sailing, running, killing people, etc… so they needed lots wild energy in the shape of animal protein)

Well, the good news is: I am not a viking but just a regular spanish guy, so I don’t need that food style. I am slowly building knowledge of what’s best for my body. For the moment I am trying to focus on more grain, vegetables, legumes… and I am finding recipes and advices in this site which look quite useful, so I will keep reading!

  183. Elise (Post author)

hi ruben! glad you found me 🙂

  184. Kaitlin

OH my goodness! I am so happy I found this! I am from So. Cal (sorry, USC fan 😉 you guys won this year though) and am up in Northern California for school! I also studied in Barcelona and miss it so much! Ok, add another random fact to it, I am thinking of moving back east (NY?) for work next year! Can’t wait to read more of your posts 🙂

  185. Elise (Post author)

    hi kaitlin!

  186. Barbara

    Elise,

I’m so happy to have found your blog! I’ve been scanning for the past 30 minutes and I want to keep reading. You have such a lively personality in your writing and your recipes are really fab. Love it!

Hi, I am referring to the pix under the heading of “dips, spreads…” on the recipes page. Beneath the heading is a white bowl with I guess it’s…hummus, and 5 or 6 brown round (maybe) crackers. Do you have a recipe?

I hope this is a better explanation of what I am looking for. Thanks

  189. Elise (Post author)

    mary’s gone crackers.

  190. Arielle

Hi, I just discovered your blog because I was looking up vegan restaurants in Paris and your post came up on my google search. I’m a young American living and working in Paris, recently turned vegan but a health and fitness fanatic. I think we are long lost friends haha I feel like I can relate to everything on your blog, including all the digestive problems and my doctor recently told me to follow the low fodmap diet which is why I also decided to try out veganism. Anyway I’m definitely going to try out some of your recipes and the restaurants in Paris you listed but I’d love to talk with you more about how you have combatted IBS problems, etc. Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy Holidays!

  191. Khadijah

Elise, I thought of you when I read the most recent post on Oh She Glows blog about carrageenan and how it can cause IBD, etc. Carrageenan is in many processed foods, including milk/cheese alternatives . Have you heard about this? Here is a link to more info on it:
    http://www.cornucopia.org/carrageenan/

  192. Elise (Post author)

i totally saw her post about that and starred it to look into.
looks like im going to have to start making my own almond milk…

  193. kyle osborne

    Hi Elise,
I looked everywhere on this site for a private way to email you, but couldn’t find one. At any rate, I’m writing to see if you would ever be open to receiving outside content for the site, which you could use (or not) as you see fit?
If so, I’d love to include you on a list of blogs that I maintain. I can be reached at kosborne@vocus.com
    Thanks!

  198. Nick @ Veggie Meal-Maker

    Hey Elise!

Just found you blog and wanted to say, “Hi”! Your recipes look great and I am looking forward to digging in.

Your parents sound awesome! Our little family is working on reducing our footprint… We are currently remodeling a Vintage Airstream that will be our off-grid mobile gypsy dwelling.

    Excited to follow your blog!

    Hippie Cheers! -NICK

  199. Elise (Post author)

hi nick! thanks for saying stopping by 🙂
props for the airstream remodeling – i think those vintage ones are so cool!

  200. Christina

I’m so grateful i found your blog!!! you’re like the big sister i never had. A year ago i was a vegetarian and trying to cut down on all my footprint stuff as well, but my IBS started to hit me HARD, that vegetarian lentil soup, and pretty much everything i ate, was doing less good for me than a bottle of gatorade. I went to a doctor, was diagnosed with IBS, and after studying up a bit started cutting things out. Less beans/legumes helps, I can hardly stand any onions/garlic/alliums at all, and when i finally cut out gluten i was really starting to feel better. But eating gluten, meat, and legume free on a busy college schedule is basically physically impossible. SO i went back to eating meat. It was really hard. I’m a big hippie and i hope that by following your FODMAPS experience i can find a way to get back to eating like a hippie without being punished by my colon. I’m glad I’m not the only 20 something hippie with IBS 🙂 thanks for your blog!

  201. Beth

Elise, I know you live in Southern California. I have been looking to move to this area for a while. Can you give me an idea of what areas might be good, safe, and reasonably priced (for California)! I’m looking on craigslist, but I don’t know what to look for. Obviously Bel Air is out of my league! I would appreciate any help/advice you can provide, if you have time. Thanks so much.

  202. Samantha

    Hi!

I cannot seem to find the area where I can sign up to receive your blog? Please help!

    Hi Elise,
Congrats on your baby boy! I’m wondering…do you take any vitamin/mineral supplements regularly (besides for the pregnancy)? I follow a similar diet to yours (MOSTLY vegan & low fod-map) and I’m thinking of including magnesium and vitamin D3 occasionally. Just wondering your thoughts.
    Thanks!

  205. Elise (Post author)

    thanks arielle!
as i mentioned, throughout pregnancy i took a prenatal, folate, and fish oil. prior to pregnancy i took doctors best digestive enzymes. nothing else regularly, but D3 occasionally. like 2 times a month. never taken mag, but seems fine to me.

  206. SUDY

Hi! Loved your website! I noticed one picture of you with flour (red package). I am trying to void white flour. What brand or name you use. Thank you

  207. Emma Milligen

Not sure how I hadn’t found this blog earlier! I can relate to a lot of your posting, it’s kind of odd. I’m also the oldest of three girls, and love being so close to my sisters as well 🙂 . Thanks for the inspiration! Reading your posts is really making me want to focus more on my down time rather than the excessive work-time I’ve been having to do as of late. Keep it up! I look forward to scavenging through your site for new food and fitness ideas 😉

Hi Elise! I just found your blog through HLB on twitter. I also live in the Bay Area and work in healthcare for my day job. I am from the east coast though. I’m also a vegetarian so we seem to have a lot in common! Can’t wait to read more of your blog. 🙂

  211. Claudia Zanolli-Stiles

Hi Elise! My name is Claudia! I’m 18 and learned I have IBS about a year ago…it has been such a struggle throughout high school and now that I’m in college, I’m still learning. Obviously, it will take a lifetime and never be perfect but I’m hopeful! Anyways, I LOVE your blog. My mom and I are obsessed with eating super healthy and learning new things about having a mostly vegan lifestyle and such.
It’s funny because a lot of the things you eat on a regular basis, I eat everyday. Like salads with veggie burgers and avocados are a favorite. Or oats and an egg.
I’m also a runner and love it so much. Anyways, I was so excited to find your blog because not many people actually know they have IBS and not many people understand. So yea:) Congratulations on the baby and everything!
    Claudia

  212. Elise (Post author)

Great site , great recipes and very inspirational ! I too suffer a lot of intestinal issues and i read that you have IBS and follow a fodmap diet . One question i have is , why do you consume wheat ? Is it not one of the worst offenders for IBS and other gastro-intestinal disorders ? Not offending , just curious ? cheers Simon .

  216. Elise (Post author)

For fodmaps it’s important to do trial and error to sort put which groups you tolerate and which you don’t. Each individual is different. I can handle small amounts of wheat but do tend to avoid it nowadays. Gluten is different and something I don’t have an issue w. please remember to do your own testing. Also this site is over 4 yrs old and I’ve only discovered fodmaps in the past year so older posts will not reflect my current diet.

I LOVE this website! I have always loved healthy eating but only recently become mostly vegan. I have two little girls and one of them has a life threatening food allergy to all things milk. I’ve learned through this process that milk is in so many things! To add to the situation she is a picky eater. I began juicing and making popsicles, salsa, using my vitamix to make sauces for noodles and nuggets. All in my efforts to sneak wholesome nutrients into her diet. She thinks apple juice is green because of the kale I have always snuck in, and I’m ok with her thinking that for now. Anyway…my point: I have had the hardest time finding younger vegans. I try to meet young, hip, vegan momma’s and it’s stifling. We moved to Florida from Maui a few years ago and it is very challenging. I love your ideas and recipes.

  218. Elise (Post author)

thanks lisa! im glad you found me. i love that she thinks apple juice is green. haha. you rock!

  219. Terri

    Hi Elise,
I love your website/blog but am a little confused…back in Feb I posted a question to you but it was under the FODMAPS blog, which seemed to stop right after that. Little did I know, you were having a baby! (probably that day 🙂 Anyway, I never heard back and so I will ask it again here…I have Post-Infectious IBS, came on suddenly after a bad “stomach bug”. My doctors weren’t much help, in fact gastro. doc “fired” me because he said there was nothing wrong with me that he could fix! Fortunately I saw an article in the Wall St Journal about FODMAPS, and it really changed my life! I sure miss all those great foods i can no longer eat, but I don’t miss the PAIN! So my question is, why can i sometimes eat the “bad” foods (a little) and at other times, the tiniest bit of a bad food makes me really sick? Is everyone that different? Do you ever experience an IBS attack and you just can’t figure out what caused it? Ex: last week i had a tossed salad like i always do, but sprinkled some dried cherries on it, less than a tablespoon…VERY sick the next evening! WHY?? BTW–keep up the good work!

  220. Elise (Post author)

hi terri. im sorry i dont have an answer. glad youre enjoying the sites. the fodmaps blog is still going, but this is my main site.

  221. Terri

After all of your thorough experimenting, do you still “goof up” once in a while and eat something you thought you could tolerate, and then your IBS kicked in again? Also what have you found about the processing of foods? You mentioned being able to eat a few cherries, but those dried cherries just about killed me. Also, cooked applesauce seems to be OK, but not a whole fresh apple. Have you found consistencies in the way a food is cooked/processed that seems to make a difference in how well you tolerate it?

  222. Elise (Post author)

of course i goof up! im human!
id really advise you to look to your own tolerances and try to stay in tune with what YOU handle. my blog is not intended to be taken as the bible on how to eat, especially w something as complicated as fodmaps. use my site for meal ideas, but listen to your body’s reactions and nothing else.

  223. Allie

    Hi Elise,

I love your blog and have been reading it for a couple of months now…thank you so much for all the fun recipes! You have an adorable family! So, I have some food allergies, but cutting those foods out hasn’t given me total relief and I still have IBS symptoms. I am interested in FODMAPs and would love to chat with you more. What are your favorite books/resources?

    Thanks so much!

Hi. I’m not sure where to post this so I hope here is okay. I am a new follower and completely in love with this blog (from your name to the recipes and everything in between). I know that you said you don’t label your diet and what you eat and I think that is wonderful. I have had so many problems over the years explaining “what I am” based on my food preferences and I love that you will not let your diet be a label for you. I am going to try this approach, however I doubt if my friends/family will go for it.

Also, do you have an all-time favorite meal? I am looking for some new vegetarian options and I am asking around.

  226. Elise (Post author)

    thanks chandler!
my all time favorite dish is a “hippie bowl” – which is a grain, a protein, and a veg (dressing/sauce optional). I’m partial to quinoa, carrots, and seitan with Bragg’s aminos. I have it once a week at least. If you search hippie bowl on my site I’m sure you’ll get tons of examples 🙂

Hi, I stumbled across your blog looking for breadmakers for gf bread. I saw your beautiful pics of northern cal and it made me miss when I lived there. I used to live in Davis for 23 yrs but because of divorce I have been in northern idaho. I have been up in idaho for 2 yrs and miss the long growing season. All those fresh fruits and veggies! What a spoiled girl I was. We would go to the fruit stand off of I-80 before you get to Dixon all the time. The co-op there is the best! The farmersmarket food is also some of the best too!! And nugget market on covell is one of the most beautiful grocery stores around. To say the least I miss that town so much! The wine country, the abundant culture is unique. North Idaho is beautiful, but lacking in much of the progressive culture. There is a bit of it here, but nothing like Northern Cal. Anyway, savor your life there, it really is a privilege to live and raise a family in that area. Plus up here we have 4-5 mos of summer and the rest is cold, cold and grey ongoing winters. I miss the long summers! Have a beautiful life and thankyou for sharing your blog, take care!!

  236. Melany McDermid-Venter

    Hi Elise,
I’m from South Africa and a mom of two young boys, 4 and 2. I started noticing this terrible change with my body in January 2012. Since then I have been diagnosed with IBS, found out that I am lactose intolerant and that I need to aviod large servings of other FODMAPS which has been quite difficult for me to do on my own. Unfortunately most South Africans know nothing about IBS and no one has ever heard of FODMAPS before. Even other IBS sufferers I have met have never heard of it before and may of them suffer through their symptoms. I was amazed when I realised the GI’s and dieticians didn’t know anything about it either (obviously mine included… yay!). No one can help me. Luckily I found out about the low FODMAP diet on the internet and reading blogs such as yours has helped me a lot, though I must admit, I am scared of trying many of the delicious foods you are able to eat (or shouldn’t eat but sometimes you’ve just got to)… I also wish I could buy some of the yummy food that you have in the US that we don’t get here…
But your blog reminds me that living with this new found (I have no idea where it came from) *functional gastrointestinal disorder* (what a mouth-th-full) doesn’t have to be that bad.
So thank you from here, down South.
    Melany.

    Hi,

I was wondering what your diet was like when you were pregnant? Did you incorporate more animal protein?

    Thanks!

Hi Sarah. Check out the pregnancy tab under my FAQ page.

It’s really encouraging to find someone else who tries to make the low FODMAP diet more herbivore-friendly. I used to be a vegan, too (probably what made me so sick), and really struggle with eating meat – not only because it goes against my principles, but also because it seems to make me sick. Glad to have found your blog, I’ll keep checking back!

    Hi Elise!

Thanks for the awesome food blog/product reviews you have been responsible for. I agree that the Arbonne Chocolate protein shake is mad-delicious, and it is comforting to read your review in that Arbonne products are one of your alternative choice protein powders. Has anyone commented that besides being an awesome blogger, you are way sexy? I just did…

I just graduated with a pre-med degree and have been applying to a few programs here and there after ruling out PA school. Hi Elise,

I’m a more recent follower of your blog, but am so happy I came across it! I live just up the road from Davis near downtown Sacramento, and I find it especially fun to follow local blogs.

Anyway, I was wondering if you have any running route recommendations for the Davis area? I’m always looking for new, nearby places for a change of scenery. All suggestions welcome, but would especially love options for longer runs (8-12 miles). Thanks in advance! : )

  245. Elise (Post author)

hi lindsay! i wish i had suggestions but I’m fairly new to Davis myself and have only lived here newly postpartum and then as a working mom. So that’s my excuse for not having many miles under my belt.
When I do get out, my range is 2-4 miles at best. I love the El Macero neighborhood – lots of loops, as well as the greenbelt. I’m pretty sure you can create any distance of runs with the Davis greenbelt actually, which you can basically access anywhere.
Try doing a google map view to see the bike paths – because if you haven’t discovered it yet, the city is bike friendly like nowhere else.
    Hope that helps!

  246. Lindsay

Thanks, Elise! I will have to check out the Greenbelt. After some brief googling, it definitely looks like you can do many, many miles on it alone. Bike paths will be next on the list to look into.

When you have time between work and mommyhood, if you haven’t visited the UC Davis arboretum yet, I recommend it! Nice running path with lovely scenery. And if you’re ever looking for Sacramento area recommendations for running, restaurants, or anything else, I’d be happy to tell you about the gems we have here!

    Hi Elise
A little bit confused with your fodmap recipes. I have the monash fodmap app which recommends a list of high fodmap foods. I notice many of your recipes contradict the foods these. Ie apples, sweet potatoe etc told not to eat these.

  248. Elise (Post author)

go by the book. i try to do fodmaps but i don’t always mind them. also, old recipes on this site exist pre-fodmaps discovery.

Hi. Randomly came across you blog as a result of googling crock pot steel cut oats, so happy I did.. a great read! I am wondering if your entries are indexed, or tagged. For example, I saw in one blog post that you have written more on your son’s food allergies. I would love to read those posts specifically. Is there a way to find them?

Look forward to reading more! Also, are you from Denver? I noticed your sadness about the SuperBowl and had to ask. We live in Boulder and share your sorrow 🙁

  251. Elise (Post author)

    Hi Betsy!

I’m not from denver I just like peyton manning and hate pete carroll (because I’m a UCLA alum). 😛

Regarding the allergies, I’m only just now starting to write more, but in the meantime, I’ve tagged everything that discusses them with “allergy” so you should be able to click on those at the bottom of another allergy post. or search them as tags. hope that helps!

    Hi Elise,
I was wondering if you knew of a vegetarian breakfast sausage or chik’n that was gluten-free or ok for FODMAP? So far every brand I have come across has wheat in it. It’s gonna suck if I have to give it up completely. Being vegetarian and trying to be GF has been hard enough, but now my Dr. has recommended the FODMAP diet, so I really have to be careful with the labels. I normally try to stick with whole foods and limit processed, prepackaged items, but I do like my veggie sausage and chik patties. 🙁

  255. Kiki

So happy to see someone embracing the word “hippie” in such a positive light. Like today’s hipsters, there were about twenty different types of hippies, not just those who were maligned by an entire generation of haters who passed the hate onto their children. Without hippies, we wouldn’t have all these great food options, as well as a lot of technologies…and much, much more. I was a kid during that time and it amazes how under and inaccurately educated everyone is about that movement. Everyone should read, “Sleeping Where I Fall” by Peter Coyote for an accurate depiction of some of the hippies and their lives.

  256. Kiki

    BTW – love your blog.

Phew, I just found your website! I’ve been veg most of my adult life, and vegan for 7 years. I was diagnosed being GF a few years ago (hard) and fall off that from time to time. I moved from AK to ID recently, and just saw a new ND in MT (closest for me) who’s suggesting I try a FODMAP diet. I thought being GF and V was a challenge (more for others than me), but now avoiding some loved veggies, legumes and grains? Yikes. And living 1.5 from a grocery store, even more so. Fortunately I’ll be moving to a friendlier V environment of Asheville, NC in the fall.

Looking forward to browsing and trying your recipes!

I wanted to ask you, are there any vegan organic cream cheese subs out there that don’t use soy? I am no a vegan or vegetarian for that matter, but have recently had to switch to an anti inflammatory diet and have found many of the vegan and organic products are what I am needed. I don’t do anything half hearted so am looking for non soy choices. I can use organic soy if there isn’t any other options. I have to stay away from all gmo foods which includes regular soy, wheat, especially corn, sugar (the only sweetener I can use is blue agave syrup)peanuts, (all other nuts are fine) rye, dairy products. Thanks for you thoughts on this.

  261. Elise (Post author)

im not sure off hand but you may check daiya products. they make vegan cheeses that don’t have soy and i know they have a new cream cheese product so it may fit your dietary needs. good luck!

Hi Elise! I first found out about the flag program (the one where you can get a flag flown over the Capital in honor or in memory of someone or something) from your post about it. I just received one that I purchased to gift to someone and I’m not sure how to present it. I thought it would arrive in a case or box but it came rolled up. Do you have a clever way of storing/presenting it? I got the largest size (8×12) and most flag cases seem to be for 5×9.5′ flags. Thanks for your blog and all the food inspiration!

    Hi Elise,

I’ve been reading your blog on and off since you were a vegan living in NYC! It’s fun to see it evolve and see you experiment with different diets.
I work for a company called Ingredient1 and we’ve developed a free app that streamlines the process of searching for groceries for people with food allergies / sensitivities. It may be a useful tool for you and your family!

  269. Elise (Post author)

That sounds great Felicia! I will definitely check it out…is the app available now through iTunes or still in the works?

    Hello,
I’ve been searching, searching and searching for those prepared meals packages from Healthy Times. I am a hospital based physician and they used to have it in my hospital cafeteria. Then the powers that be decided to change vendors and I was left without my favorite lunch/dinners (with subsequent weight gain!). I would love to order them myself from the company. I haven’t found them in my local Whole Foods in Newport Beach. Would you have any idea how to get them? I apologize for any inconvenience in this matter.
    Best,

i have no contact or connection with the company so sadly i cannot help. but let me know if you find out a way to get them shipped because id be interested in that for sure now that I’m in Davis. i miss those guys lots.

    Hi Elise,

I was just wondering if P goes to daycare. We are in a similar situation as you, our son also has severe allergies and I was wondering if you had any tips specifically for daycare?

Any chance I can email you? (I tried to find your email but couldn’t find it)

    Thanks!

  274. Elise (Post author)

Hi DB! Feel fee to email me (my address should be on the sidebar but it’s edieden AT gmail DOT com)! P is not in childcare but we do activities at settings that do have risk for allergy exposure (parent co-op play group, library, gymnastics, etc.). However I am always present so I am not sure if my tips would be as helpful as someone’s who has gone through the nerve racking trial and error of leaving your child with allergies in the care of another person. I will try to think about it though…

Hello Elise, Greetings from England. I just want to let you know how much I love your Quinoa Granola recipe, which I make on a regular basis. I came across your blog when I googled quinoa granola for no other reason than I fancied seeing if anyone had made such a thing. I came across quite a few, but yours is definitely the best. I activate the buckwheat and quinoa overnight, so cook it at a different temperature and for longer, but it’s so tasty! I have no food issues or allergies, and I’m a carnivore, I just love good food, especially a tasty breakfast, so I’m going to work my way all through your granola recipes, and hope you’ll be creating a few more.
