PUBLISHED: PUBLISHED: 00:00, Thu, Nov 10, 2016 Girl Scouts and Girl Guides GETTYScouts and Girl Guides are better equipped to cope with stress, new research suggests Children who take part in these organisations, which aim to develop traditional virtues such as resilience, self-reliance and resolve, have better mental health in middle-age, a study found. Experts believe taking part in outdoor activities, such as camping and orienteering, could reduce the higher risk of mental illness for those from poor backgrounds. A team of researchers studied data from almost 10,000 people across the UK. Around one in four of the participants had been scouts or guides as youngsters. The researchers found that those who had belonged to the scouts or guides tended to have better mental health at the age of 50. Girl Scouts walking GETTY Taking part in outdoor activities could reduce the higher risk of mental illness The Scout Association is helping give young people the ability to develop mental wellbeing throughout their lives Bear Grylls And former scouts or guides were around 15 per cent less likely to suffer from anxiety or mood disorders, compared with others in the study. The findings, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, suggests attending guides or scouts may help build resilience against common stresses in life. And former scouts and guides are more likely to achieve more in life and so less likely to experience stress. Bear Gyrlls GETTY Bear Grylls is proud that scouting provides people with a chance to develop the skills Lead researcher Professor Chris Dibben, from the University of Edinburgh, said: "It is quite startling that this benefit is found in people so many years after they have attended guides or scouts. "We expect the same principles would apply to the scouts and guides of today and so, given the high costs of mental ill health to individuals and society, a focus on voluntary youth programmes such as the guides and scouts might be very sensible." Professor Richard Mitchell, from the University of Glasgow, said: "Governments and health services around the world struggle to do something about the health gap between richer and poorer people, so this new evidence that being a scout or guide can help is very important." And figures from Girlguiding record 553,600 girl guides. Bear Grylls, Chief Scout of the Scout Association, said: "I am really proud that scouting provides young people with an opportunity to develop the skills they need to be resilient and deal with what life throws at them. "Through initiatives such as our A Million Hands Campaign, the Scout Association is helping give young people the ability to develop mental wellbeing throughout their lives."
