The event brings together research which explores how language can be used in schools to both reinforce and challenge sexism, homophobia, heterosexism and heteronormativity. Contributions will examine the various ways in which analysis of spoken and written language use in schools can further understanding of how educators and students experience gender and sexual diversity, and how different gender and sexual identities are constructed through language in school contexts. The event is intended to be interdisciplinary, bringing together practitioners and scholars working in linguistics, education, and gender and sexuality studies. In doing so, this will facilitate rigorous and timely engagement with the complexities of language, gender, sexuality and education. The event is co-organised by the British Education Research Association (BERA) and the British Association for Applied Linguistics and aims to promote dialogue between gender and sexuality research being conducted across the related disciplines of education and applied linguistics. The event aims to connect language, gender, sexuality and education research to those who face challenges around inclusion, enriching their professional practice. It also aims to suggest some ways that gender and sexuality diversity might be adequately addressed in guidance, school policy and curricula.
