The PM faces a Tory backlash after he could not rule out another tax rise, despite his manifesto-busting hike in National Insurance and breaking the pensions triple lock to plug NHS gaps and pay for social care. When pressed by the BBCʼs Andrew Marr on Sunday, Mr Johnson said he would not put up taxes "if he could possibly avoid it". Speaking at a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, Commons leader Mr Rees-Mogg fumed that the UK was facing "highest tax level since the war" and "we are at the reaches of the reasonableness of the tax burden". He said: "Even Harold Wilson with 98% tax rates did not manage to get the tax take much about 38% of GDP, so there is an automatic limit of taxpayers own devising." He added: "We must always be looking to ensure the money spent by the state is spent efficiently and the tax burden is reasonable and we are at the reaches of the reasonableness of the tax burden. Boris Johnson, Prime Minister departs The Andrew Marr Show at the BBC, MediaCity, Salford ( Image: Elliott Franks) “Even when tax rates have been considerably higher, the tax take has not been much higher. “Why on earth would you think higher rates in the 2020s would have a greater effect than they did in the 1960s and the 1970s. “I think we are about at the limit of what taxation can raise.” The top Tory also suggested the health service could make savings by GPs offering fewer face to face appointments and that the multi-billion pound restoration of parliament was not good value. The PM told the Andrew Marr Show it was "total nonsense" that he was more like Harold Wilson than Margaret Thatcher - and said neither had been forced to deal with a pandemic. "We have had to look after the British people with £407 billion of protection for their jobs, for peopleʼs livelihoods," he told the BBCʼs Andrew Marr Show. "It was most beneficial to the poorest and the neediest in society." Asked to rule out further tax hikes, Mr Johnson said: "You have no fiercer and more zealous opponent of unnecessary tax rises than me, but we have had to deal with a pandemic on a scale which this country has not seen before in our lifetimes and long before. "We donʼt want to raise taxes, of course we donʼt, but what we will not do is be irresponsible with public finances."
