"In these grave times, I have taken the decision and have the determination to stand... and be the president of a France that is reconciled, to respect the French people and have France respected," Michel Barnier told TF1 on Thursday. Barnier, who in February set up a "working group" within the Republicans called "Patriot and European," plans to take a more right-wing tone than Macron, telling the French press that he wanted to "restore the authority of the state" and "limit and have control over immigration." He also told the French newspaper Le Figaro daily that he supported giving asylum to Afghans who had helped French forces but that "we cannot welcome everyone." The 70-year-old also has an extensive political career beyond his run as Brexit negotiator. Between 2010 and 2014, he was the EU commissioner for the internal market, and he has held top French political posts since the 1990s. READ MORE: What is ISIS-K? Barnier's Republicans party will wait until September 25 to choose its candidate for the presidential run. Despite this, Barnier may court the same voters as Macron, specifically the pro-European electorate, if he gets the chance to run for president. If nobody wins an overall majority, a runoff will be held two weeks later between the top two candidates, and opinion polls currently suggest that far-right Marine Le Pen will be Macron's closest competitor. Other politicians have also started to hint that they would like to throw their hats into the ring. Former minister Xavier Bertrand, who leads the north-eastern Hauts-de-France region, said that he will also bid to run in the election. Anne Hidalgo, the socialist mayor of Paris, has hinted that she would also like to run and become the country's first female president.
